Gold(III) terpyridine complexes [Au(terpy)Cl]X2 (X = SO3CF3, BF4) are suitable compounds for mechanistic studies on activation of organic substrates. The X-Ray structure analyses of these complexes show a number of short contacts of the complex dication with the two counter anions. This may be a good model for an incipient reaction of a substrate. Studies on C-H, N-H, and O-H bond activation are in progress using [Au(terpy)Cl]X2 complexes.
