The benefits of good therapy
This section is aimed at demystifying therapy or counselling & aims to reduce stigma around seeing health professionals regarding mental health.
2
As they say, it’s better out than in!
3
Good therapy can unburden you from what’s been weighing you down and empower you by sharing your problems with someone who understands and can help you deal with them. Good therapy gives the you ‘permission’ to start your journey of recovery and begin the healing process.
4
Therapy is a vital relationship and you may need to try a few different kinds with a few different counsellors or doctors, before you find someone you’re comfortable with & works best for you. This may take time but it’s important not to get disheartened.
5
The initial consultation is one of the most important ones you’ll have and if it doesn’t feel right – if there’s not a certain degree of understanding or engagement or you don’t feel like you’re being listened to – then you have the right to try elsewhere. A lot of people, no matter what their age, tend to think that medical professionals know best because they’ve got a degree in that area – whatever the doctor prescribes for them, whether it be medication or therapy, must be right. But that’s not necessarily the case – medical professionals and their treatment options or management styles are not all the same, just as patients and their situation and preferences are not all the same.
6
It is important to understand that recovery won’t be overnight – you should see gradual improvements, & your doctor should have a recovery plan for you that you can go through together & discuss options & expectations.
7
What you share with your doctor is confidential & you shouldn’t have to worry about it being broadcasted to others.
