Fig 1 Algorithm for patient selection and study inclusion. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Adult Cardiac Surgery Database versions DCF v.2.73 and v.2.81 were queried from July 2011 to March 2016 for aortic root replacement cases. This resulted in 24,244 patients. We then excluded all patients with diagnosis of emergency or urgent status (n = 8,142), a diagnosis of endocarditis (n = 625), reoperative cases (n = 2,965), aortic arch surgery (n = 342), circulatory arrest cases (n = 3,350), and isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or mitral valve replacement (MVR) cases (n = 8). This resulted in 8,807 cases at 808 centers across the nation to be studied. (CV = cardiovascular.)
