This is a weird…IRREGULAR….verb!
We don’t say, “I be 12 years old.”
We say “I _____ 12 years old.”
I am 12 years old.

3. In English, we don’t say “you be 12 years old.”
We say “you _____ 12 years old.”
You are 12 years old.
We don’t ask, “how old be you?”
We ask, “how old _____ you?”
How old are you?

4. In English, we don’t say “he or she be 12 years old.”
We say, “he _____ 12 years old.” Or
We say, “she _____ 12 years old.”
He is 12 years old. She is 12 years old.

5. This verb is just as weird in German.
This is the verb sein.
This is the weirdest (the most IRREGULAR) verb you will learn in German.
You ask somebody’s age by saying,
“Wie alt bist du?”
“How old are you?”
In German, du bist means you are.

6. To answer that question in German,
You could say, “ich bin 12 Jahre alt.”
That means……?
I am 12 years old.
Therefore, to say “I am” in German, you would say….?
Ich bin.

7. Wie alt bist du? Ich bin 12 Jahre alt. Practice/übung….

8. Your turn… Ask your partner, in German, “how old are you?”
Your partner must answer, in German.

So how would you ask, “is he….?”

And how would you ask, “is she…?”

10. With your partner… Try to figure out how to ask, in German:

“Wie alt ist er?”

Now how would you answer….
He is 12 years old. OR She is 12 years old.
Er ist 12 Jahre alt. OR Sie ist 12 Jahre alt.

11. Turn to the set of partners in front of or behind you to form a group of four.
Ask one of the “new” people about the age of their partner….ask “how old is he?” or “how old is she?”
