3 1 Cor. 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2  and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3  and all ate the same spiritual food; 4  and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 5  Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness. 6  Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7  Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY." 8  Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9  Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10  Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11  Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

4 lit. For I do not want/desire you to be ignorant, brothers
1 Cor. 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2  and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; lit. For I do not want/desire you to be ignorant, brothers that our fathers (Israelites) were were – eimi – the state in which someone* continually exists all under the cloud all – pas – all, none excluded under – hupo - under, beneath, through Exodus 13:21-22 & Ps 105:39 tells about “the cloud” all passed through the sea passed – to pass through or over – Neh 9:11, Ps 66:6 Exodus 14:22 tells us about “the sea” * or something

5 What is this telling us about the Israelites & Moses?
1 Cor. 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2  and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; all were baptized into Moses in the cloud baptized - baptize – to dip or immerse, can be used of physical or spiritual baptism (a "baptism" undergone by believers, thus witnessing to their identification with Him in death, burial and resurrection) – aorist/indicative/passive What is this telling us about the Israelites & Moses? What does the cloud represent? (all were baptized into Moses) in the sea; What does the sea represent?

6 and all ate the same spiritual food;
3  and all ate the same spiritual food; 4  and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. and all ate the same spiritual food; spiritual = supernatural in its origin (from God) What was the food? see Ex. 16:4, Deut. 8:3 tells us about this food and all drank the same spiritual drink, What was the drink? see Ex. 17:16, Num. 20:11, Ps. 78:15 the food and drink typified Christ see John 6:35,48, John 4:13-14

7 3  and all ate the same spiritual food; 4  and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 4  And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them [produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality], and the Rock was Christ. (AMP)

8 5  Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.  nevertheless(but) – alla – in strong contrast with most of them God was not well-pleased What was God displeased about? see Num 13:1-3, 14:1 and Heb 3:16-19 for they were laid low in the wilderness 5b  for they were overthrown and strewn down along [the ground] in the wilderness. (Amp) see Num 14:2 and 14:29

9 Now these things happened as examples for us
6  Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. Now these things happened as examples for us examples - typos - figuratively an example, pattern to be imitated, followed - see Phil 3:17 The Greek word translated "examples" is typos from which we get the English word "type." The experiences of the Israelites in the wilderness are types. They were early examples of situations that would recur later in history that God designed to teach His people lessons Constable

10 so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.
6  Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. so that – with a purpose that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. we = believers in the church age they = Israelites evil things - stands for whatever is evil in character, What kinds of things did they crave? see Num 11:4 and :34, Ps 106:14

11 Stop becoming idolaters (Wuest) - as some of them were
7  Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY."  1. 12 8  Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
neither let us be committing fornication (Wuest) - as some of them did - and twenty-three thousand fell in one day see Num 25:1- 9

13 Neither let us be putting the Lord to an all-out
9  Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 3. Nor let us try the Lord, Neither let us be putting the Lord to an all-out test, trying Him to the utmost, (Wuest) - as some of them did - and were destroyed by the serpents. see Num 21:4 - 9

14 10  Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
Stop grumbling, discontentedly complaining (Wuest) - as some of them did see Num 16:41 - and were destroyed by the destroyer. see Num 16:49

15 Now these things happened to them as an example
11  Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Now these things happened to them as an example example - typos – (same as in verse 6) Now these things befell them by way of a figure [as an example and warning to us]; (Amp) and they were written for our instruction, they were written to admonish and fit us for right action by good instruction, (Amp) upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 7/10/16 1Cor 10_1_11 R.
