4 II.The Great Society Education- More than $1 billion dollars in federal aid to public education Healthcare 1. Medicare-health insurance for people over 65. 2. Medicaid- health insurance for people collecting welfare C) Housing- low-rent public housing.

5 D. Immigration- The Immigration Act of 1965 ended quotas based on national origin
E. Environment- Water Quality Act of required states to clean up rivers F. Consumer Protection- A series of safety and truth in packaging laws.

6 III. The Warren Court Took and activist stand on many leading issues including segregation and freedom of speech Greatly expanded the rights of the accused addressing such issues as illegally obtained evidence, free lawyers and reading of rights.

7 III. Freedom Summer CORE and SNCC traveled through the South to register African-Americans to vote. In Mississippi three volunteers were murdered by Klansmen and local police.

8 IV. Final Push for Voting Equality
MLK led a series of marches in Selma, Alabama to protest disenfranchisement of African-American voters. B. Voting Rights Act of eliminated literacy test for voting and creates federal oversight of state elections.

9 V. Black Panthers Armed citizen patrols to monitor police officers.
Instituted a variety of social programs such as free breakfast for children .
