Parts of Speech Why do I need to know the parts of speech?
The eight parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences. Every word has a job when it is placed in a sentence.

Nouns A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, thing, or idea. Examples: teacher, shark, Chicago, skateboard, love

Pronouns A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. Name the antecedent before using a pronoun. Examples: she, he, it, they, we, their

Verbs A verb is a word that shows action or being. Whatever you’re doing can be expressed by a verb. Examples: jump, hit, run, am, is

Adjectives An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun or a pronoun. An adjective describes or modifies a noun. Examples: huge, six, cooperative, grumpy, invisible

Adverbs An adverb is a word that tells us more about 1) a verb; 2) an adjective; or 3) another adverb. Examples: loudly wildly immediately somewhat really

Preposition A preposition is a word that shows relationship of one word in a sentence to another word. Prepositions tell 1) where something is 2) where something is going 3) when something happens 4) the relationship between words. Examples: aboard above below until past

Conjunction A conjunction is a word that joins other words or parts of sentences together. Conjunctions are like glue. Examples: FANBOYS for and nor but or yet so

interjection Interjections are special words that show strong feelings or emotions. They usually come at the beginning of a sentence. Sometimes they are sounds, shouts, gasps, or exclamations. Examples: Aha Ahem Hello Ouch Yikes Wow
