2. Parts of Speech Why do I need to know the parts of speech?
The eight parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences. Every word has a job when it is placed in a sentence.

3. Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, thing, or idea.
Examples:
teacher, shark, Chicago, skateboard, love

4. Pronouns
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. Name the antecedent before using a pronoun.
Examples: she, he, it, they, we, their

5. Verbs
A verb is a word that shows action or being. Whatever you’re doing can be expressed by a verb.
Examples: jump, hit, run, am, is

6. Adjectives
An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun or a pronoun. An adjective describes or modifies a noun.
Examples:
huge, six, cooperative, grumpy, invisible

7. Adverbs
An adverb is a word that tells us more about 1) a verb; 2) an adjective; or 3) another adverb.
Examples:
loudly wildly immediately somewhat really

8. Preposition
A preposition is a word that shows relationship of one word in a sentence to another word. Prepositions tell 1) where something is 2) where something is going 3) when something happens 4) the relationship between words.

9. Conjunction
A conjunction is a word that joins other words or parts of sentences together. Conjunctions are like glue.

10. interjection
Interjections are special words that show strong feelings or emotions. They usually come at the beginning of a sentence. Sometimes they are sounds, shouts, gasps, or exclamations.
