The combined use of the Expander II Balloon and Curette – How to achieve desired restoration of lost vertebral body height and sagittal alignment? John Dabis, Hani Abdul-Jabar, Matt Smith and Michael Kotrba Croydon University Hospital Spinal Unit BASS, Norwich 2013
2
Aim Demonstrate the surgical technique developed with the Expander II balloon, with the curette to restore desired directed elevation of the vertebral body end plate Can this technique improve sagittal alignment and overall vertebral body height? And will this affect clinical functional outcomes?
3
Methods Retrospective analysis
Data analysis of radiological parameters, kyphotic angles and functional outcomes SF-36 and VAS Selection criteria Age > 50 < 3 acute osteoporotic vertebral fractures Clinical and radiological positive indicators Isolated end plate depression

Discussion A Randomized Trial Comparing 2 Techniques of Balloon Kyphoplasty and Curette Use for Obtaining Vertebral Body Height Restoration and Angular-Deformity Correction in Vertebral Compression Fractures due to Osteoporosis L. Bastian, F. Schils, J.B. Tillman, and G. Fueredi 2 different balloon kyphoplasty techniques both using intra-operative curettage Both techniques resulted in significant vertebral body height restoration and kyphosis correction
13
Conclusion Curette coupled with Expander II balloon can safely and effectively achieve desired directed elevation of end plate fractures
