RAB GOLD Committee Scope Approved at Committee GOLD Committee Annual Meeting (March) 2006 SCOPE: GOLD Program focuses on needs of the recent graduates and young professionals. Recent graduates are defined as those typically 2-3 years after graduation with their first professional degree in an IEEE related field. This includes graduate students (GSM). Young professionals are defined as graduates in the early stages of their career. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

RAB GOLD Committee Functions 1.Collaborate with IEEE entities to achieve the committee's vision and mission. 1.Membership Development: Conceive, develop, and advocate IEEE GOLD-specific benefits and services to the appropriate IEEE entities and at conferences, symposia and similar events. Promote strategies to facilitate the transition from Student Member to higher grade and to work with the Student Activities Committee (SAC) to achieve this goal. Develop strategies to encourage the retention and promotion of GOLD membership. 1.Volunteer Development: Recognize GOLD activities performed by individuals or entities. Identify and develop volunteer leaders among GOLD members and promote their representation in appropriate IEEE entities. 1.Region Activities: Promote and coordinate the establishment, support and sustainability of GOLD Affinity groups. 1.Society Activities: Develop initiatives for increasing value of societies to GOLD members. 1.Promote IEEE awards that recognize GOLD members. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

GOLD program/activities for members Concept: –International/Regional (global) vs. section (local) activities. International Activities: –Developed and executed by RAB GOLD Committee –Accessible to ALL GOLD members –Consistently provides membership value to members –Methods of delivery: Internet or IT-based tools IEEE Mentoring Program GOLD Online Seminars 'Expert Now' Tutorial GOLDRUSH Newsletter GOLD Online Challenge (2006: to celebrate GOLD 10th Anniversary) IEEE.Tv * Local Activities –complement the activities delivered through virtual means by RAB GOLD Committee –provide face-to-face opportunities –organize activities that meet unique local needs IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

IEEE Mentoring Program Provide mentoring opportunities within the IEEE community: –mentoring relationship is not dependent on change of job. Web-based program. Conducted a pilot program in 2005; involving Region 1,2,3. Invite higher-grade members up to age 55 as mentors Invite higher-grade members up to age 40 and GOLD members as mentees Informal style of mentoring where mentee self-selects mentor by searching for potential candidates Article in print June 2006 The Institute Complete communications for launch, which should be in August 2006. http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/gold/mentsessions.html IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

GOLD Online Seminar 1.Invite experts to speak on topics that are relevant to the recent graduates and young professionals. 2.Deliver 3 online seminars annually, 1 hour each, targeting members especially GOLD worldwide. 3.Broadcast voice and presentation slides via the Internet using Microsoft Live Meeting 4.Engage speaker interactively using question type-in. 5.Organized by RAB GOLD Committee, Membership Development Activities. 6.Publicized using the Online Institute, Sections and GOLD Affinity Groups. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

GOLD Online Seminar Past events: www.ieee.org/goldwww.ieee.org/gold Networking: How young engineers can open the door to more opportunities; by Karen Susman: Decemeber 2005 Plan for financial success 'Key to live by'; by Larry Grogan: May 2006 Coming events: 1.10 success factors in project management; by Margaretha Eriksson: 27th September 2006 2.Project Management: Conduct Effective Meetings; by Margaretha Eriksson: November 2006 3.Career Planning: January 2007 IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

'Expert Now' Tutorial GOLD collaborates with EAB (Educational Activities Board) to introduce an online self study material that is targeted for GOLD members. Carl Selinger, author of "Things that you do not learn in engineering school" developed the tutorial. Samples of the tutorial should be available in Sept. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

GOLD Online Challenge 2006 Celebrate GOLD 10th Anniversary 10 days Online Scavenger Hunt. 20-29 October MP3 players up for grabs! www.ieee.org/gold IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

IEEE launched Beta release of IEEE.TV on August 15. An internet-based broadcasting network that produce and deliver prerecorded, special-interest programming for engineers and technologists. Programs are available for members-only and general public. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006 RAB GOLD Committee is brainstorming on the kind of TV programs that interest young professionals and recent graduates. The outcome will be reported to RAB in Nov. www.ieee.org/ieeetv

Purpose of the GOLD program Consider the customers! To provide a choice avenue for our members to acquire skills that enhance their employability and quality of life. To provide opportunities for our members to network and develop meaningful friendship. To offer our members a safe environment to discover their talents and train themselves. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Satisfied customers will eventually retain their membership. Not only so. But, through word of mouth, more recent graduates and young professionals will get to know IEEE and GOLD, and naturally become part of this community. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Question IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006 Consider the parent organization. How relevant is GOLD to IEEE? In what ways? - Reach and Bridge -

There are still some challenges! It continues to be difficult to retain the recent graduates and young professionals. There isn't one clear solution but a combination of actions that will deliver results in the long run if we remain steadfast and faithful. IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Identified weaknesses of GOLD at the RAB level No product or services that sufficiently attracts the majority of the recent graduates and young professional to continue their IEEE membership Poorly defined operations at the RAB GOLD Committee Lack of collaboration between GOLD and other IEEE entities 1.IEEE Mentoring Program (to be launched in July/Aug '06) 1.GOLD Online Seminars (3 times a year) 1."Expert Now" Tutorial (by Carl Selinger, first sample available in Sept '06) 1.defined mission and vision statements 1.redefined GOLD's target audience 1.proposed a new committee structure Rework the GOLD Charter 1.GOLD/Societies Pilot project 1.invited GOLD reps from the major boards to be in the GOLD RAB Committee. 1.GOLD/SAC task force IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Possible weaknesses of GOLD at the Section (AG) level Operations Are there clearly defined goals and well established committee structure? Collaboration Is there close relationship with the Section, Chapters, and student branches? ? ? Publicity/Marketing? Product / Services Is there an annual event that specially meets the needs or attracts GOLD members in your section? IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Two questions for you to ponder 1.What are the weaknesses in your AG that prevent it from taking flight? 2.Do you really desire your AG to soar? IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006

Thank you IEEE Region 8 Student & GOLD Congress, Paris, 1 September 2006
