Aim: How did Gandhi lead India to independence?
Do Now: List at least 3 things you know about India and/or Gandhi.

2. Background on Indian Independence
Indians resented British rule:
Indians treated as second class citizens in their own country
Indian farmers forced to grow cash crops which led to the destruction of India’s agricultural system
Indians forced to buy British made goods which destroyed Indian industries

3. Background on Indian Independence (cont.)
In 1885 an organization called the Indian National Congress was formed. The goal of the INC was to gain independence from Britain. Leaders included Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
Hindus – majority
Muslims – minority
In 1906 the Muslim League was founded. The goal of the Muslim League was to form a separate Muslim state called Pakistan.
