Structure of the Church
Deacons We use the expression “a Romans 14 issue” when we are in disagreement over something that is not consequential to our faith. What does this mean?
4
Deacons of the Church Examples Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Philippians 1:1
5
Deacons of the Church Qualifications – 1 Timothy 3:8-13 Examples Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Philippians 1:1

11
Qualifications of Deacons
5. Holding the mystery of the faith w/ a pure conscience The mystery revealed as in 1 Tim. 3:16 The mystery revealed as in Eph. 3:6 Eph 3:4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets; 6 that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel,
12
Qualifications of Deacons
6. Tested Examined to be complete in qualifications Similar to all Christians in 1 Pet. 1:7, 2 Cor. 13:5 1Pe 1:7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? --unless indeed you are disqualified.
13
Qualifications of Deacons
7. Blameless/beyond reproach In qualifications and in Christ Christians should be blameless per 1 Cor. 1:8 1Co 1:8 who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Col 1:22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight--
14
Qualifications of Deacons
8. Husband of one wife Multiple possibilities based on the wording: a) That he possess a wife (he is married) b) That he is scripturally married c) That he has only married once The third point would be the safest, as it would include the previous two Consider a similar term in 1 Timothy 5:9 Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, (although the word for “one” is different; in 1 Tim. 3 it could mean first, and 1 Tim. 5 it refers to the number one.
15
Qualifications of Deacons
9. Good managers/ruling their children and houses well All fathers must preside over the home per Eph. 6:4 Headship with moral integrity HOUSES and CHILDREN – this statement causes us to see that one may have but one child to be qualified
16
Qualifications of Their Wives
10. Reverent/grave Indicating this is shared by husband and wife Applied to Christian women in Titus 2:3 in Philippians 4:8 it is translated as honest.
17
Qualifications of Their Wives
11. Not slanderers/malicious gossips Applied to Christian women in Titus 2:3 me diablos – not a devil me diablos: not (falsely) accusative
18
Qualifications of Their Wives

19
Qualifications of Their Wives
13. Faithful in all things All Christians are to be found faithful (1 Cor. 4:2) A cover all – totally faithful All Christians are to be found faithful in their charge (1 Cor. 4:2). 1Co 4:2 In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. (NAS95) This seems to be a “cover all” for the deacon’s wife.
20
Deacons of the Church Considering qualifications: - All are virtues into which we aspire to grow - Deacons are not: - Elders in training - Servants of the elders - Called to serve without elders present
21
Duties of Deacons No statement as to the duties of a deacon - Necessary inference: 1) They are present only with elders 2) Their qualifications are very similar to elders 3) Conclusion: they assist elders in oversight
22
Duties of Deacons No statement as to the duties of a deacon - They assist elders in oversight Our deacons assist our elders: - Leading our group studies - Managing our worship (location and obligations) - Managing the treasury - Ensuring none are overlooked
23
Deacon Goals All of us should strive for spiritual maturity
We should desire the church in its structure We should enable others to serve
