Tactical Fouls: SPA & DOGSO
Presented by Chris Hughes
2
What is a ‘tactical foul’?
“A deliberate act of foul play intended to bring about an advantage for the perpetrator. It usually involves a defender fouling an attacking player in order to prevent them from scoring or stopping a promising attack. The resulting free kick or penalty may offer the attacking team a lower chance of scoring than the original playing position and the defender therefore has an incentive to strategically foul the attacking player.”

What is a ‘tactical foul’?
The severity of the foul is a separate consideration. The player is penalised for the more serious offence!

DOGSO: Denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
What is an obvious goal-scoring opportunity?

Considerations D Distance between the offence and the goal D General Direction of the play D Location and number of Defenders C Likelihood of keeping or regaining Control of the ball

The Penalty Area When a defender stops a promising attack or denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity inside the penalty area, we have some further considerations: Does the defender attempt to play the ball? Does the defender have no possibility to play the ball (in a fair manner)? Does the defender commit an offence that cannot be carried out in a fair manner? E.g. handball, pushing, holding, pulling
9
The Penalty Area “Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. handball, holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.”
