Strive 2019 LD Symposium April 30, 2019

2 STRIVE 2019 Welcoming students in Grades 7, 8, and 9, staff and families to spend the day learning, thinking and talking, about self-advocacy. The students will be aiming to enhance their ability to communicate their needs appropriately and to know more about themselves as learners. 5 What Is Self-Advocacy Self-advocacy can be defined in several ways:
Learning to speak up on your behalf and ask for what you need. Learning to take charge and be more independent. Three steps to self advocacy Know your self as a learner 1 Know what supports you need to be successful 2 Communicate your needs appropriately 3 Can Learn Society, 2014

6 SOAR resource can be used to create a “Self-Advocacy Snapshot”
Personalizes a student’s strengths and needs. Outlines the accommodations and supports that a student may require in the classroom. Enables students to better understand and identify their needed “tools for success”. Empowers students to become comfortable asking for the supports that they need. A Resource to Help Build Self-Advocacy Skills

7 Self-Advocacy Snapshot Is Designed To …
The student “self-advocacy snapshot” should contain the following information, and help the student feel comfortable with the following: understand both cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses (begin to understand your learning disability) understand and recognize the assistance and or supports/accommodations they require in the classroom identify which accommodations and supports are effective for them (the “tools for success”) acquire the vocabulary, body language to request support and feel confident in asking for accommodations
