1
Bell ringer: What did you do for spring break? Be ready to discuss
What is the process by which cells divide? Why do you think its important for scientist to classify things? How are structure and function related?
2
How do the levels of organization work together?
Structure: The arrangement of parts in an organism or an object Function: the activity of each part in an organism The structure of any object can determine its function.
3
How do cells divide? Cells divide by a process called mitosis
One cell divides and makes a identical cell Mitosis is responsible for growth and repair
4
Why do we classify things?
Scientist classify living things based on characteristics that living things share.
5
How do scientist know living things are related?
By their physical characteristics and chemical characteristics Scientist look at similar bone structures Scientist look at similarities in DNA
6
How are living things named?
In the 1700s scientist Carolus Linnaeus developed a simplified way of naming living things Each kind of living thing has a two part scientific name
7
What is a Genus? And what is a species?
Species: a group of organisms that are very closely related, they can make and produce fertile offspring Genus: Include similar species
8
Scientific names Puma concolor
A scientific name always includes the Genus followed by its species. The first letter of the Genus named is always capitalize and the first letter of the species is lower cased. The entire name is either italicized or underlined Ex: Puma concolor
9
What is taxonomy? The science of describing, classifying and naming living things Today, scientist use an 8 level system to classify living things Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
10
Bell ringer: The science of naming, classifying, and describing living things is known as _______________________ True/False Delphinus delphis What is the genus of the organism named in question 2? What scientist came up with the 2 part naming system? The 2 part naming system is called _________
11
What are the three domains?
Bacteria Archaea Eukarya
12
What kingdoms are in eukarya?
Kingdom Animalia Kingdom Plantae Kingdom Protista Kingdom fungi
13
How can organisms be identified?
Dichotomous key A dichotomous key uses a series of statements to identify an organism
