Study Survival 101 Practical tips for students who hate studying.

2 Revising at home As we get ready to complete our assessments for the term, it is important that you are making the time out of class to revise all of the necessary content. You should be putting in place good practises and revision programmes so that you are able to be an independently confident learner at home. This presentation has some important and useful tips for you to remember to get you started.

3 Technology Technology can be a disastrous distraction or an amazing tool during study time. As Juniors you have a great opportunity to learn how to use technology the right way.

4 Managing Distractions
Turn off notifications When notifications are off, you have to go into the app to get any updates which are easier to schedule in your study breaks. Alternatively, delete these apps from your phone and just visit them on your browser during study breaks. The NoPhoneTimer App: Locks you out of any other screen on your phone for a set amount of time. This helps to reduce distractions but also helps focus as it has a stopwatch on the screen which countdown until a study break which increases motivation.

5 Rewards Sometimes getting good grades isn’t enough motivation. This is often long-term and a big picture goal. Small rewards are motivating towards a long-term goal. They also keep the study period more enjoyable which is important to fuel you up. Talk to your parents/caregivers about setting some goals. Maybe they are willing to offer a reward if you meet your goals.

6 Rewards Food After each completed study task reward yourself with a lolly or treat. Before you do a practice assessment, set a goal and if you reach that goal reward yourself with a lolly. TV/Games Great to be used as a reward at the end of the day of studying but is very risky to be used as a break during studying. Especially on Netflix when the next episode plays automatically or the next Battle Royal is starting! Be cautious of how much you watch TV or play games during study time. Try setting a timer for a reasonable amount of time or only doing this at the end of the study day.

7 Holistic Self-care is extremely important during study periods. Exams and studying are some of the most stressful times for young people. For many of you this will be your first experience of formal school exams. It is really important for you to learn how to balance your wellbeing and studying. If you do this it will set up well for the rest of High School and if you are going onto further study. No exams/assessments are important enough to sacrifice your wellbeing for - keep it in perspective.

8 Holistic Eat well A common mistake during high-stress times and study periods is to rely heavily on sugary foods, takeaway food, and energy drinks. This is negative for long-term health and ultimately bad for exam performance. Some of the best food for long-term energy and brain health are eggs, peanut butter, leafy greens, green tea and fresh fruit. Balance Make an effort to book in catch ups with friends and family time during the study period. This should be face to face and doing things you enjoy. Not only will this make you feel more refreshed when you go back to study, it also gives your brain valuable time to process the information you have learned. Exercise Exercising during exam time (and all year round!) has positive effects on the brain and hormones. Exercise significantly reduces resting levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, allowing you to spend less time worrying and more time getting work done. If that wasn’t enough, regular movement has also been shown to result in an increase in the size of the hippocampus, a part of the brain involved with memory retention.

9 The main things to remember:
Use your Junior exams as a way of learning how to do your very best in future exams. Do not let technology be the reason you don’t reach your potential. Make a detailed and realistic study plan and stick to it. Set small goals and reward yourself when you reach these goals. You should care about these exams and they are important but make sure you look after yourself as well.
