Order of Operations The Order of Operations is the order of solving a mathematical problem. You must solve problems using the order of operations working from the left to right.

*Whichever comes 1st, left to right.*
PEMDAS Use the acronym PEMDAS to help you remember the Order of Operations P – Parentheses E – Exponents M/D – Multiplication or Division *Whichever comes 1st, left to right.* A/S – Add or Subtract

1.) Parentheses ( ) Complete the math within the ( ) before you solve anything else. 11 – (2 + 4) 11 - (6) 5 Before you can do anything else, you must do the operation inside the parentheses.

After solving any problems in parentheses, solve all exponents.
Clear(solve/evaluate) the exponents. 52 + 7 25 + 7 32 After solving any problems in parentheses, solve all exponents.

3.) Multiplication & Division
Solve the multiplication and division from left to right in the order in which you find it. 36 ÷ 6 x 4 6 x 4 24 The 1st operation to do in this equation is division.

Solve the addition and subtraction, from left to right in the order in which you find it. 10 – 7 + 4 3 + 4 7 In this problem, you do the subtraction first because you solve from left to right.
