The Black death was a terrible disease that killed 1/3rd of Europe’s population!
It started in ASIA and arrived in Europe in 1348

THE 2 PLAGUES The Black death was really TWO PLAGUES! A Rash Red and Black spots all over the body A Fever – Hot & sweaty Shaking 1 Caught from fleas from Rats 7 out of 10 would be dead in a week! Boils (Buboes)– Under their armpits and behind their ears

2 Awful Breath Caught by breathing in Germs or infected Air
Victims would be dead in days Awful Breath It would smell as if their lungs had rotted! Coughing The victim would cough up Blood spraying deadly germs

QUESTION: WE know now how the disease was caused… Why would they not have known? They did not have the same KNOWLEDGE or TECHNOLOGY we have now.

What would THEY think caused the Disease?
BAD SMELLS People thought bad smells caused disease 3. POISONED WELLS People blamed outsiders like the JEWS for poisoning the water 2. PUNISHMENT BY GOD People thought God was punishing them for being bad

How did they Treat the Black Death?
FLOWERS They carried around Flowers to keep away bad smells! 2. MOVED People moved to the countryside to stay away from people 3. VIOLENCE Jews were often killed 4. RELIGION People even Whipped themselves to show God punishment for their sins!

Houses were very close together spreading disease quickly
There were no sewers so sewage was running in the streets, attracting rats There was also animals and rubbish everywhere

BAD EFFECTS Over 75 million people died in Europe 1 person in 3 would die in some areas GOOD EFFECTS There was more land and jobs for people due to people dying People became slightly richer
