Neuter Law: The nominative and accusative cases are always identical, and in the plural the nominative and accusative cases always end in –a. Let’s apply this rule to our 3rd declension chart and see what happens…

Third Declension I-Stem Nouns
A group of third declension nouns called i-stems have –ium instead of –um in the genitive plural. The neuter i-stems also have –i instead of –e in the ablative singular, and –ia instead of –a in their nominative/accusative plurals. Let’s take a look….

How to identify an i-stem noun
There is a long list of rules that will teach you how to i.d. which 3rd declension nouns are i-stems. If you’d like to read it, see p. 321…otherwise, just look for the nouns marked with an asterisk (*) in your book’s vocabulary lists! * Nouns are i-stems. Thank you, book!!! Also, the parts are listed nom. sg., gen. sg., gen. pl., like hostis, hostis, hostium (f.) N.B. (nota bene): I-stems are not marked in your glossary with an *, but are listed like “hostis” above.
