What does a linking verb do?
It links the subject of a sentence to another word in the sentence that describes it=subject complement They don’t show action They show a state of being, a quality, or a condition
5
How can I tell which words are linking verbs?
The BE verbs are always linking verbs when they are by themselves Be, am, is, are, was, were, been, being Other verbs sometimes are linking verbs

Let’s look at some examples Find the subject complement
One girl in my class is very studious. Her grades stay high because she works hard. She seems happy with her grades. I wasn’t her friend until now.

What’s the easiest way to tell if a verb is a linking verb?
Think of a linking verb like an = sign In a math problem, at the end, you write x=38 or whatever number it is. You are saying that they are basically the same. A linking verb is also like that = sign. It says that the subject of a sentence = the subject complement One girl in my class is very studious. Girl=studious Her grades stay high because she works hard. Grades=high She seems happy with her grades. She=happy I wasn’t her friend until now. I=friend

How can I tell a linking verb from an action verb?
Linking verbs will always be like an equals sign Acton verbs are not an equals sign; often the subject is doing something to something else Action verbs describe an action that is done. Linking verbs just describe She looked at the boy across the room. (action) He looked embarrassed to see her. (linking, he=embarrassed) The kitten’s fur felt soft. (linking, fur=soft) I felt it very quickly before the kitten woke up. (action)

What is the wrong way to use a linking verb?
You can’t use a linking verb to link a subject to another verb Common mistake: My finger is really hurts. You could say “My finger really hurts” or “My finger is really hurt (adj)” but not with the verb This homework is sucks. Sucks is a verb, so you should use it by itself, not with a linking verb My homework looks well. Well is an adverb, not an adjective. Say “My homework looks good.” **Special note: you can use a BE verb with an –ING verb. That’s different; there, the BE verb is a helping verb She is working; I am typing; you were studying while I was eating. NOT she is work; I am type; you were study while I was eat.
