2 History of Darbuka Darbuka is the Arabic term, derived from the verb “darb” (stroke), for the single- headed goblet shaped drum. It is originated in Egypt. From ancient times to present it is usually made of clay.

3 Music in Ancient Egypt

4 The goblet shaped drums seen in Mesopotamia in the Babel civilization until around 1100 BC could be forefathers of the darbuka.

5 Darbuka Today Today’s modern darbuka is popular in North Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, etc.) the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Israel, etc.), South Eastern Europe (Greece, Bosnia, Romania), Southeast Asia (Malaysia and Indonesia)

6 Types of Darbuka Egypt Type Clay Darbuka: It has two sizes including solo and bass. Goat or fish skin are used for the head.

7 Types of Darbuka Egypt type metal casting darbuka: Plastic skin is used for the head.

8 Types of Darbuka Turkish Type Copper Darbuka: It is an imitation of Egypt type darbuka. It has a flat rim and made of copper. Both natural and plastic skins are used for the head.

Arab Technique: This technique is commonly used for playing darbuka. Said el Artist, Hussam Ramzy and Setrak are the renowned masters of this technique.

Misirli Ahmet Technique: This technique is found by Turkish master Misirli Ahmet. Darbuka players use his technique since late 1990s. Misirli Ahmet and Levent Yildirim are the masters of this technique.

Snapping Technique: Because of the flat rim this technique can only be used on Turkish type darbuka. Turkish musician Cengiz Ercumer is one of the masters of this technique.

12 Darbuka Usage in Turkish Music Genres
Folk Music (17th Century) Folk music includes mostly Turkish folk literature. Aşık poems is performed by baglama. Lyrics are on love, legends and life stories.

13 Darbuka Usage in Turkish Music Genres
Classical Turkish Music (19th Century) includes Divan Literature and as well as composers. It uses makam melody system. Lyrics are on longing to the beloved, joy of life, spirituality, etc.

14 Darbuka Usage in Turkish Music Genres
Pop music (20th Century) Pop music stars in the late 1950s with covers of popular styles like rock and roll, tango and jazz. Turkish pop music includes Turkish rock, Arabesque, heavy metal etc.
