Using apps help optimize and manage your grad research life

General overview of why we need apps and how the rise of mobile tech is up across every demographic and in every country around the world.

´Technological developments occur all the time!
Since mobile tech is huge, it makes sense that this would translate into education as well. Here are some stats on how tech and apps/mobile devices have helped students in higher ed. I go through at least two stats here and read them aloud.

As a more specialized introduction to the presentation I let them know we will be covering apps that more generally go over the following areas and NOT just research organization. I let students know all apps are free unless otherwise stated but there there is usually a premium upgrade for all apps presented here. Also, with the mobile app there is an accompanying webiste they can log in to see content or use on a desktop computer or other electronic device.

5. Organization/ Note Taking
Let Evernote change the way you organize your personal and professional projects. Dive in: take notes, create to-do lists, and save things you find online into Evernote. We’ll sync everything between your phone, tablet, and computer automatically.
Basic app and one of the first ones out there. Old but still important to know about. If you need a quick and dirty go to for taking notes or creating or recording audio- use this app.

6. Organization/ Note Taking
Dropbox is the place for your photos, docs, videos, and other files. Files you keep in Dropbox are safely backed up and you can get to them from all your devices. It’s easy to send large files to anyone, even if they don’t have a Dropbox account.
Another oldie but goodie. Dropbox was one of the first cloud storage apps and software out there. This can be compared to Microsoft’s OneDrive and Google Drive as well. Use this to send off video files as a go to easy way to send large videos without any compressing or altering of video.

7. Organization
Wunderlist is the easiest way to get stuff done. Whether you’re planning a holiday, sharing a shopping list with a partner or managing multiple work projects.
Organize and share your to-do, work, grocery, movies and household lists. No matter what you’re planning, how big or small the task may be, Wunderlist makes it super easy to get stuff done.
A quick and dirty easy to share and use list. Works like paper and pen. You make a list and then you scratch things off. Another oldie but goodie and the lists can be shared and synced across devices like most apps in this presentation.

8. Organization
When you find something you want to view later, put it in Pocket.
SAVE FOR LATER
Put articles, videos or pretty much anything into Pocket.
Save directly from your browser or from apps.
VIEW WHEN READY
If it's in Pocket, it's on your phone, tablet or computer. You don't even need an Internet connection.
A great place to find things online while searching to read offline for later. Yes I said to read offline. I usually log into Google and go through this demonstration live. Most students find this is a new app they didn’t know about before.

9. Organization/ Note Taking
Another new one for many students. Use this app to capture notes on a 3D surface to turn into a file that can be searched using Control F (control find) functionality and this can then be easily ed or sent to other Microsoft programs. This might be one worth looking at as a class to see how it works. I have been told by many students after they attended the workshop that they use this app and find it helpful.

10. Project Management
Asana is the easiest way for teams to track their work and get results. From tasks and projects to conversations and notifications, Asana enables teams to move work from start to finish. It’s simple to get started, but powerful enough to run your entire business.
Asana project management. The Teams version before Teams came out. Works great to organize a large group- free for under 15 members- includes chat, text, and place to send and share files. It does not store the latest file or allow for everyone to use same file and have up to date edits. You can use Google docs with this product as a shared file can be edited by multiple people at one time. You can limit who sees things and only share certain notes with chosen people on any given team. Create projects, tasks and keep up to date with due dates and everyone stays on the same page. Make sure tha that your group project doesn’t go unmanaged every again.

11. Time Management
Waking up easy is all about timing. Sleep Cycle alarm clock tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up during light sleep.
Waking up during light sleep feels like waking up naturally rested without an alarm clock.

The only app in the presentation that costs anything. Provides students with an alarm to help them maximize their potential for burning the midnight oil. I usually go into a story about knowing how many hours are needed for you to sleep- including getting up with a newborn infant.

12. Time Management
Leading timesheet app for tracking work hours. Use the timer to log task times and get reports based on the time usage. All the time logs are synced to the cloud and you can track time also in the web version, desktop app and with a Chrome extension - all your data is safely under one account.
A place to find out how long you take to do certain tasks. Great for freelancers who want to document the amount of time they take to do any given task. Detailed reports are free and even upgrade to have invoices created for easy billing to clients.

13. Research
Mendeley is a free reference manager and PDF reader designed for researchers, students, and knowledge-workers.
Make your own fully-searchable library in seconds, read and annotate your PDFs, and collaborate with others in private groups. Sync your library across all your devices including Mendeley Desktop, where you can easily cite your research as you write in Microsoft Word.
Online version via app for citation management software. Same as the web version.

14. Research

Simple easy app to help researchers gather and organize simple citations. Use this at conferences to scan an ISBN of a book you want to document when you return from attending a conference but don’t want to lug around all the books in your luggage.

15. Finance ´Credit Score ´Budgeting ´Money manager ´Bill keeper
Easy but thorough finance app that helps keep your spending in check, help with staying on budget and to help save for future goals and things you want to pay down. Monthly reports provide more detail than you would ever want to know.

16. Saving Money Invest spare change “Found money”
Easy way to save on a budget
Acorns is an easy way to save money without really feeling it. It puts your spare change into an account that invests money as well as allows you to send to a bank account attach to a debit card for spending later.

17. Financial Planning -Monthly customizable statements -Track spending
-Save for long term retirement
Financial Planning
The young person’s easy and cheap way to learn and to save for retirement. If you want to speak or work with an investor, it is simple, easy and low cost. But the app is free to help organize your spending and works like Mint but has more financial planning advice and helps you to get a handle on what you need to save for retirement based on your current spending habits.
