Liberty, Judgment and Peace
Romans 14 Liberty, Judgment and Peace We use the expression “a Romans 14 issue” when we are in disagreement over something that is not consequential to our faith. What does this mean?

Romans 14 & I Corinthians 8 Consideration Love Sacrifice Knowledge
9
Romans 14 & I Corinthians 8 Paul’s example: 1 Corinthians 9:22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.
10
Romans 14 is not about Ignorance of the Law Romans 14:1 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 1 Corinthians 8:1 Concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge Both passages begin with the important caveat – this is NOT about those who do not understand. For these things to apply, we need to have a similar understanding. This is not for application to one who believes differently on doctrine
11
Romans 14 is not about Congregational captivity by weakness Personal liberty, not congregational
12
Romans 14 is not about License to tolerate error Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
13
We CANNOT accept anyone who comes to us with another Gospel
As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:9
14
We CANNOT receive one who brings another doctrine
Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 2 John 1:9-10
15
We CANNOT receive those who act contrary to Christ’s doctrine
Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them Romans 16:17
16
We CANNOT keep association with an immoral brother
But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner-- not even to eat with such a person Corinthians 5:11
17
We CANNOT keep membership with a disobedient brother
And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed Thessalonians 3:14
18
Christian Liberty does not:
Permit us to avoid teaching Permit us to tolerate sin Permit one brother to dictate to all
19
Applications Know the difference in opinion and doctrine Treat brethren with respect Control our words and ideas Put others before ourselves
