8th Grade Science Watershed and water quality Crumple Paper Activity

Materials • One 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper per pair.
• One sheet of newspaper per pari • Several different colors of water-soluble, non-permanent, felt markers. Brown/Red Green Purple Blue • Clean spray bottle with water. • Tape

Procedures 1. Choose 3 locations for your mines. Using a brown/maroon marker, draw 3 #’s to represent the locations of your mines. 2. Choose two locations for your city. Using a purple marker, draw 2 $’s to represent its location. 3. Choose 4 locations for your farms. Using a green marker, draw to represent their locations.

Procedures 4. Take a sheet of paper and crumple it up into a wad. (The looser the wad, the better.)

Procedures 5. Uncrumple the paper and set it on the sheet of newspaper. 6. Tape the edges of the paper onto the newspaper base leaving at least an inch of newspaper exposed around the perimeter.

8. Stop and answer questions 1 – 3.
Procedures 7. Choose a location for a river. Using a blue marker, draw a line to represent its location. (HINT: Make sure it follows the lowest points on the paper) 8. Stop and answer questions 1 – 3.

Procedures Observe what happens to your watershed.
The teacher will come around and spray your Watershed with a spray bottle. Observe what happens to your watershed. Answer the remainder of your questions. After all questions have been answered, clean up your area
