What do we learn about Montag through indirect characterization? “How did it start?.....it just doesn’t seem right for you somehow.” What literary device is this…”hotness and coldness, softness and hardness”? What is the significance? Why would Montag not move for a long time? Why would Mechanical Hound be capitalized?

2 Page 22 Literary Device: “like a great bee” significance? Why would Montag be fascinated with the beast? How can the beast be both dead and living? What is an olfactory system? Make a prediction- Why do you believe Montag now stayed upstairs most nights when this “game” went on?

You got a guilty conscience about something”? What does the last paragraph reiterate about Clarisse?

6 Page 26 How is Montag and Clarisse’s relationship different from other relationships in this society? Why would Montag, “always seemed shocked”? Why would his laugh sound nicer than it did? Define “antisocial” using the Dissect Method.

7 Page 27 Make a connection to our society today. Write a specific example in the margin. Why would Clarisse sound “so very old”? What do we learn about children Clarisse’s own age?

Why did the author italicize, ever, All, people? Who is her uncle? Why is he remarkable?

Literary Device: “lawn was empty, the trees empty, the street empty”? Significance? “Dis-ease” give two meanings for this and explain how both would be accurate descriptions of Montag. “and yet” What does this imply?

When was a reference to cold mentioned earlier in the text? Literary Device: “as if he were a museum statute”? Why would Captain Beatty describe Montag this way? What does this mean, “These men were all mirror images of himself!”?
