5 minutes On your table there is a small laminated disc with a texture on it. Find where your texture fits on one of the images that are placed around the side of the Art room. Your disc texture is an enlargement of an area on the image so it will not fit exactly.

How have these images been created?*
minutes Having looked at all of the images around the Art rooms, what are they images of?* Landscapes How have these images been created?* Using different mark making, mostly lines and dots How do the artists create a sense of depth and distance in the images?* Using different thicknesses of lines ~ darkness of the line created by pressure ~ building up the amount of mark making to create a sense of tone

Learning Objectives You will: What I’m looking for…
Learn that you can make drawings using the mark making that you have learnt. Learn about different kinds of pencil. Learn how to make different tones with mark making. Develop your skill in making different tones. What I’m looking for… You have a clear understanding about the difference between H and B pencils. You understand what tone is and how it is created in different ways Ability to control your pencil in different ways to create tonal variations.

DISCUSSION What is a HB pencil used for?*
minutes What is a HB pencil used for?* Usually for sketching something or for first stages of tone application What is the difference between a H pencil and a B pencil?* H pencils are hard and used for technical drawing, B pencils are soft and used for shading/adding tone What are the different ways in which tone can be created with a pencil?* 1) Applying different pressure with the pencil 2) Building up layers of mark making

& 40 minutes Watch a teacher demonstration to learn how to generate tone using these two techniques. (switch to the visualiser and the Shading Techniques sheet)

PREP.WORK You must ensure that your ‘shading techniques’ sheet is completed fully. Make sure each box gradually gets darker by building up the mark making. Either a) stick this sheet into your book or b) cut the grids and titles out and make your own decorative presentation page (merits will be given for high quality pages using option b)

3 minutes Turn to the back of your sketchbook and thinking about the learning objectives from the start of the lesson, tick each statement that you feel confident you have learnt. Now at the right-hand side, write down one specific thing that you have learnt today that you didn’t know before. Learning Objectives You will: Learn that you can make drawings using the mark making that you have learnt. Learn about different kinds of pencil. Learn how to make different tones with mark making. Develop your skill in making different tones.
