High school ELL students proficient in reading & math
Why is it important? 1. Underserved. DEPTH OF THE CHALLENGE a. Right now fewer than 15% of high school ELL students are succeeding—are grade-level proficient in reading and math. In districts with long-standing high percentages of ELL students as well as districts recently experiencing a rush of newcomers and beginning English speakers, statistics show that as few as 5% of these students are achieving proficiency levels in reading and math. ELL students by 2025: one in four
Growing need. BREADTH OF THE CHALLENGE By 2025, one in four students will be an English Language Learner. Separate Point here. Let’s put below into new slide: (find image of fragmentation (maybe breaking an existing photo into shards, with some missing pieces?) Diverse needs, fragmented approach a. Because the profiles and needs of ELL students are so diverse, district approaches are often fragmented, with successful models being difficult to sustain and scale. These challenges only multiply in our middle and high schools—where the depth of the issue is undeniable. b. Districts must face these challenges comprehensively and holistically or risk reaching AYP, Common Core, and any other state or federal legislative proficiency goals and standards. EVALUATE- District Profile & Student Assessment
The parts of the Solution are: #1 Evaluate District Assessment: researching trends and analyzing changing demographics at the district level to diagnose and then help districts implement the appropriate modules from the Pearson English Learning System that target the challenges. It is the diagnostic piece that is key to its solutions approach—as no two districts are exactly alike in ELL population profiles and needs. ELL Population Assessment: SELP: the only valid and reliable language proficiency assessment that is aligned to instructional solutions so that teachers can accurately target instruction to what students need—and then benchmark progress. Language proficiency measurements in 3 formats – Formative, Summative, and Benchmarking – allow teachers to measure and monitor a students language proficiency growth at the beginning, end, and throughout the year SELP (Stanford English Language Proficiency test) with skills correlation to Instruction. Will be available as hand-held option for 6-12 through PKT technologies. EVALUATE- District Profile & Student Assessment English Language Learners

ELL specific professional development is offered in a variety of configurations and access points—in both virtual and face-to-face offerings. That PD is then embedded directly into the lessons and unit plans for the above instructional programs. i. SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) ii. A+RISE iii. SUSTAIN- Progress Monitoring
a. Pearson understands the criticality of distinguishing between language proficiency and grade level academic knowledge when determining instructional goals for ELL students. Having both types of growth data allows teachers to effectively monitor the progress of their ELLs and identify the practices that are truly effective. a. NEED AIMS WEB COPY HERE There is no progress monitoring tool in existence that measures the progress of ELLs based on normative data. This tool allows for the setting of realistic instructional goals based on language proficiency level as well as skill achievement levels—the key to understanding at a district level if students are truly improving and moving toward academic success. Diverse needs, fragmented approach
a. Ongoing District Profile Monitoring: Dynamically Review Success and Challenges Tracking of ELLs after they have achieved the highest levels of language proficiency and have moved back into the mainstream—something which districts today are not equipped to do. Districts using the Aims Web tool know how their students are performing throughout their academic careers and can be poised to celebrate successes as well as to address any issues post reclassification. Calibrated Planning and Modular: Uses data to drive decision-making across all areas of student progress and teacher best practices Each instructional program is designed to align with specific Instructional Implementation Models utilized in ELL practices today. Districts finally have programs designed to use with what they have in place—and a mobile strategy with DASH to facilitate implementation specific to the instructional model. No other PD programs are proven to effectively train teachers on teaching language through content—a requirement of the Common Core. c. In addition, Teacher Compass is embedded as an additional tool linking effective practices in SIOP to the instruction. English Language Learners
