5 Breaking the Stereotypes
You will be able to define stereotyping and find examples of it in The Outsiders. You will create a character that will break the stereotypes found in The Outsiders.

6 Stereotype A stereotype is an oversimplified picture of a group or person. A stereotype emphasizes a person’s individual traits. Stereotypes can help you quickly categorize people. But at the same time, they can prevent you from getting a true picture of an individual.

Women don’t drive well. Men are better at sports.

9 Stereotyping in The Outsiders
Describe how Two-Bit and Ponyboy stereotype in novel. You will quote the text to answer the questions on your sheet.

Give an example of Stereotyping found in The Outsiders? How do you think it feels to be stereotyped? What negative consequences come from believing stereotypes?

11 Breaking the Stereotype
Create a character from either the Shepard gang or the Brumly boys who does NOT fit Ponyboy’s stereotype. Write two paragraphs about this character. Paragraph one- Character name, background, and describe his appearance and behavior. Paragraph two- describe you character’s observations and feelings as the gangs gather for the rumble.

12 Example Breaking Two-Bits Stereotype of Socs.
Brady is a tall, sixteen year-old, with a Beetle’s type hair cut. He wears a madras ski jacket everyday. Brady lives with both his parents on the west side of town and he is on the football team. Brady has an afterschool job at the local grocery store, where he is trying to earn money for car. As Brady climbed out of the car, at the park, he started to second guess his decision. He didn’t want to be here. He never went to rumbles before. The only reason he was here was because that greaser killed his teammate Bob. As Brady looked around he noticed that the Greasers look tough. There where about twenty of them.

13 Your Goal- To prove that this hood is really just a human after all.

14 Breaking the Stereotype
