Class Motto If there is a problem, We look for a solution. If there is a better way, We find it. If we need help, We ask. If a teammate needs help, We give.

Announcements Research Question are Overdue! Turn them into the tray ASAP Homework: Read and take notes on sections 15.1 and 15.2 in textbook Star Quiz 5- Thursday/Friday Over Viruses and Classification Science Club Meeting – Thursday at 3:15 in room 122

Panther Pass Review Which of the following lists the 7 categories of Linneaus’ classification system in order from least to most specific? A. kingdom, class, phylum, family, order, genus, species B. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species C. Species, family, genus, order, phylum, class, kingdom D. Species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, and kingdom

Panther Pass Review Name the 6 kingdoms
What 2 kingdoms are made of unicellular organisms that have no nucleus? An organism is multicellular and made up of eukaryotic cells. The organisms can move from one place to another. Its cells do not have cell walls or chloroplasts. Where should the organism be classified?

6 Kingdom Practice
9
Objectives I can recall the 7 levels of classification, in order, and use them to determine how closely related two species are. I can read and create a cladogram using derived characteristics of a species. I can correctly write the binomial nomenclature of a species.

Notes 1.13: Binomial Nomenclature
15
Binomial Nomenclature
Binomial Nomenclature: 2 part scientific naming system Format: Genus species
16
Examples
17
Why not use common names?
They can be very misleading!
18
How Can The Scientific Name Tell Us Relationships?
Species that are closely related have the same Genus
19
Practice 1. Where do the Dog and Wolf differ from each other? Organism
Gopher Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Rodenta Family Canidae Geomyidae Genus Canis Thomomys Species C. familiaris C. lupus T. bottoe 1. Where do the Dog and Wolf differ from each other?

Notes 1.14: Cladograms
27
Cladograms: show which organisms are oldest and which organisms are closely related. (also called phylogenetic trees)
28
Remember the word: Primitive…
Primitive = old, simple The most primitive species are at the bottom (left) The most recent species are at the top (right)
29
Most primitive Most recent
30
Closely related: Organisms have ALL the traits that come before them on the cladogram. ex. Perch has jaws (because it is to the lower left of its branch) Species are closely related if they branch off close together
31
Think: In the cladogram, what species is most primitive? In the cladogram, what species is least primitive? What traits does the lizard have? What traits does the salamander have? What is the chimp most closely related to? Is the lizard more closely related to the salamander or the perch?
32
Classwork 1.14: Create Your Own Cladogram
Follow the steps in order! Will be collected at the end of class
33
Panther Pass Binomial nomenclature: ___ names
Naming organisms: Genus ______ Which organisms are most closely related and why?: Lion: Panthera leo House Cat: Felis catus Tiger: Panthera tigris The most primitive organisms are drawn on the top right OR bottom left of cladogram On a phylogenetic tree, closely related organisms are drawn closer together or further apart
34
What characteristic(s) do the lizard and salamander share?
Is the Perch more closely related to the Hagfish or the Lizard?
