The book was probably written between 70AD and 110AD

2 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 1
Genealogy of Jesus from Abraham to David to Joseph Mary betrothed to Joseph Mary pregnant through the Holy Spirit Angel tells Joseph what is about to happen Tells Joseph to call him Jesus Fulfils prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

3 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 2
The Magi seek the king of the Jews Herod fears for his throne and intends harm to Jesus. Sends the Magi to Bethlehem A star shows the Magi where the baby is Magi warned not to go back to Herod Angel tells Joseph to flee to Egypt with his family Herod gives orders to kill all males 2 years old and under in the Bethlehem area After Herod dies Joseph and family return to Nazareth

4 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 3
John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus Challenges the Pharisees & Sadducees Jesus comes from Galilee and is baptised at the river Jordan. The chapter ends - 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus in the wilderness 40 days and nights Tempted by Satan Satan banished and replaced by angels Jesus begins his ministry He calls his first disciples, Simon, Andrew, James & John Jesus teaches in the synagogues and heals the sick

6 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 5,6,7 The Sermon on the Mount
The Beatitudes – read Ch 5 Vs 3 to 11 Be a light in the world for others, glorify God Reinforces the religious law of the Jews You will be judged in all you do. Adultery, Divorce, Oaths Love your enemy Be generous to others Prayer is a personal thing , pray in private Lord’s prayer Store up treasure in heaven not on earth Worry: Verse 34 “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Continued on next slide

“Judge not, that ye be not judged..” Unfortunately we do this every day. Do for others what you think others would do for you. Stay on the road to righteousness Beware liars Listen to the word of God and let it be your guide.

Miracles of Jesus Heals many Demonstrates his power over weather Drives out demons Calls Matthew & eats with sinners The names of the twelve apostles: Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him Jesus imparts his power of healing and driving out demons to his 12 disciples

Jesus preaches in Galilee John the Baptist in prison Jesus states no one greater than John Denounces those who remain unbelievers even after seeing the miracles Ch 11 Verse 28: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus heals on the Sabbath Pharisees plot how to kill him accusing him of being a follower of Satan

10 Gospel of Matthew – Chapters 13 & 14
Jesus speaks to the people in parables John the Baptist beheaded Herodias daughter asks for John’s head on a platter after Herod promises her anything for dancing Jesus hears the news and withdraws by boat to a solitary place. The crowd follows It is late, Jesus feeds the 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Later the disciples go to the other side of the lake by boat. Jesus walks on water

Jesus calls the Pharisees hypocrites over their interpretation of the law. He drives the demons from the daughter of a Canaanite woman who shows her faith Jesus feeds the 4000 Pharisees and Sadducees try to test Jesus but fail Jesus warns his disciples against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees Peter declares Jesus the Messiah Jesus predicts his death and resurrection

12 Gospel of Matthew – Chapters 17,18 & 19
Peter, James and John witness the Transfiguration Jesus again drives out demons He foretells his death again He tells Peter where to find the money for the temple tax Have faith like children Shepherding the one who has gone astray Dealing With Sin in the Church Show forgiveness as God shows it to you Pharisees test Jesus this time about divorce Let the little children come to me Difficult for a rich man to enter heaven 25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard Jesus predicts His death a Third Time James and John seek favoured position Two blind men receive sight Jesus triumphant entry to Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) Jesus drives traders and money changers from the Temple Jesus heals the blind and lame Temple authorities are displeased and would like to arrest Jesus but are afraid of the crowd who follow him

14 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 22
Parable of the wedding banquet when those invited insult the King by refusing to attend and are destroyed. Instead people are gathered from the street to the banquet but one is disrespectful and is thrown out to face the night alone Jesus thwarts the Pharisees attempts to get him in trouble with the Roman ruling authority God is the God of the living not the dead The greatest commandment, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”

15 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 23, 24,25
Jesus warns the disciples against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees Jesus prophecies the destruction of the Temple and his second coming. Parable of wise and foolish virgins, a warning to be always prepared. Parable of the useful and useless servant The fate of the good and of the evil

16 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 26
High priest Caiaphas,chief priests and elders plot against Jesus Judas agrees to betray Jesus Jesus celebrates Passover with his disciples in what becomes known as the Last Supper Peter’s weakness predicted Jesus and disciples go to Gethsemane, where Jesus prays. Jesus betrayed, arrested and tried for blasphemy. Peter denies Jesus 3 times as predicted.

17 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 27
Judas commits suicide Sanhedrin hand Jesus over to Romans Pilate interrogates Jesus Crowd demand Jesus executed Jesus crucified amid much turmoil Even the Roman centurion admits he was the Son of God Joseph of Arimethea gets Christ’s body and buries him in a tomb

18 Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 28
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary find Jesus tomb empty and are told by an angel Christ has risen as foretold They go to tell the disciples 11 disciples go to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus appears to them Vs 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
