MBA Recruiting in SEA Spring 2016
SOUTH-EAST ASIA CLUB
2
Factors/Criteria to think about..
People usually just thinks about Geography Industry Function But it’s worth to also think about… The “MBA package/salary” MBA development program Timeline (e.g. US for a few years then head home?) Family planning Work-life balance OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS & FINANCIAL AID
3
Understanding Competition
Target schools Consulting/ general management: Harvard, Booth, INSEAD Banking: Wharton, Booth, Columbia, NYU Stern Tech: Stanford, MIT Sloan You’re not just competing with elite schools Other nationalities that want to work in SEA (Europeans, Americans, Latin Americans) Non-MBAs: MBAs are just a category of elite recruits (relevant experience can be big factor in SEA)
4
Understanding Employers
Your future employer is very likely to fall under (at least) one of the following categories: US company Global companies with huge presence in the US Companies with a CEO who’s American Companies with a CEO who used to study an MBA Companies that fall out of the above four criteria are very unlikely to hire MBAs, or offer an “MBA package” Fortunately, there’s a bunch of these companies in SEA Unfortunately, you are very unlikely to work for a local SEA company (if that’s your ambition)
5
Industries Consulting
The most flexible in terms of geographical placement The “golden ticket” to going back to home country Banking Also flexible in terms of geographical placement But availability to Kellogg is an issue and you need to work hard Corporates (not necessarily mutually exclusive) Tech, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, Food, CPG, Industrials, Luxury, other Financial Institutions
6
Recruiting Channels On-campus recruiting – Fall
CMC’s dedicated recruiting channel Competition within Kellogg itself Need to know how to play the game Accounts for just a minority of MBA jobs out there for international students Kellogg Job Board (KJB) – throughout the year Often what people referred to as the “off-campus recruiting” People don’t usually fully utilize this channel (just flips three-four pages) There’re a lot of GEMS inside (int. students need to look here)s Other resources Next page This is the REAL off-campus recruiting
7
Other Resources MBA-exchange Great for MBA development programs
Probably the most comprehensive listings of MBA programs Exclusive too! Only elite schools get subscription (which kind of moderates demand) Indeed.com Search engine – good key words “MBA”, “MBA intern” Probably the best “catch-all” for job postings across all mediums The SEA club postings Alums/ alum club connections in SEA countries
