COLOR THE COLOR WHEEL Sets the mood and/or temperature
within your image. Example: Warm colors vs. Cool colors THE COLOR WHEEL

VALUE Helps give shape the illusion of both form & texture.

FORM Has three dimensions and can be seen from all angles.

SPACE Area around and in between people and objects.
Entails a foreground, middle ground, and a background. Scale, overlapping, placement, value, and color all create space, or the illusion thereof.

CONTRAST The juxtaposition of light and dark to create a visually striking image.

EMPHASIS/FOCAL POINT Something that immediately catches the viewer’s eye.

BALANCE Even distribution of “visual weight” within an image through the use of both positive and negative space.

RHYTHM & MOVEMENT Using the art elements to deliberately lead the viewer’s eye through the composition.

PATTERN Repetitive arrangement within an image.

Scale/Proportion Realistic vs. exaggeration

Unity/Harmony The unified cohesion of both the subject matter & the elements of art.
