1.2 Ultra structure of cells
1. Pick up your science journal.
2
Microscope sketching techniques
All drawings must be done in pencil only Use distinct single lines when drawing. No sketching. Use stippling (dots) to illustrate darker areas. No shading. Label important features of the specimen. Be sure to include scientific name of the specimen, in correct notation, if appropriate.
3
1.5 Limitations to the cell theory
Striated muscle fibers: multi-nucleated, long (30 mm) Fungal hyphae: multi-nucleated Giant algae (Acetublaria): large (100 mm) Viruses: living or not?
4
1.2 Relative cell size molecules: ~ 1 nm
cell membrane thickness: ~ 10 nm viruses: ~ 100 nm bacteria: ~ 1 µm organelles: up to 10 µm eukaryotic cells: up to 100 µm
5
Cell Organelle Review Game
Match the organelle with the definition. Some of the organelles are for prokaryotes whereas others are for eukaryotes. Draw a picture of the organelles in both cell.
6
1.2 Ultra structure of cells
1. Pick up your science journal.
7
1.2 Light vs. Electron Microscopes
Easy preparation of sample Complex preparation of sample Living material can be examined Living material cannot survive inside the vacuum of the electron microscope Color images Monochrome images Large field of view Small field of view Poor resolution + magnification Good resolution and magnification
8
Cell Organelles Activity
On the poster provided, draw a diagram of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell, including all the labels and functions of appropriate organelles. References Using the electron micrograph: Textbook pages: p. 20 – 21 Complete cell comparison chart
