Acts 2:14-36 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be

Acts 2:14-36 known to you, and give heed to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was

Acts 2:14-36 spoken of through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall be in the last days.’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons

Acts 2:14-36 and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even upon My bondslaves, both men and

Acts 2:14-36 women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit and they shall prophesy. And I will grant wonders in the sky above, and signs of the earth beneath, blood, and

Acts 2:14-36 fire, and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.

Acts 2:14-36 And it shall be, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ Men of Israel, listen to these words of Jesus the Nazarene, a man

Acts 2:14-36 attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know – this Man, delivered

Acts 2:14-36 up by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. And God raised Him up

Acts 2:14-36 again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. For David says of Him, ‘I was always beholding the Lord

Acts 2:14-36 in my presence; for He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will abide in

Acts 2:14-36 hope; because Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay. Thou hast made me full of gladness with Thy presence.’

Acts 2:14-36 Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. And so, because

Acts 2:14-36 he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants upon his throne, he looked ahead and spoke of the…

Acts 2:14-36 resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay. This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all

Acts 2:14-36 witnesses. Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured

Acts 2:14-36 forth this which you both see and hear. For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand,

Acts 2:14-36 until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet.’ Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this

Acts 2:14-36 Jesus whom you crucified.”

Don’t you just love the boldness that the Spirit of God brings upon the hearts of men?

Where would the Church be without the proclamation of the Word of God?

Romans 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?

Romans 10:14 And how will they hear without a preacher?

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Let’s go back and take a quick look at Acts 2:14-16.

Acts 2:14-16 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be

Acts 2:14-16 known to you, and give heed to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was

Acts 2:14-16 spoken of through the prophet Joel:

Shortly after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the disciples refuse to be quiet about Jesus!

Here are just a few examples:

Acts 4:1-2 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees, came upon them, being greatly

Acts 4:1-2 disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And again in Acts 5.

Acts 5:42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

As we continue through the book of Acts we’ll see first hand the importance of consistent teaching and preaching.

Before launching into the main body of his sermon, Peter discusses what is immediately on the people’s minds – the phenomena of Pentecost.

After dealing with their crazy accusation, he offers them an explanation based on Old Testament prophecy.

Acts 2:16-17a but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall be in the last days.’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind;

Acts 2:17b and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

Acts 2:18 even upon My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit and they shall prophesy.

Acts 2:19 And I will grant wonders in the sky above, and signs of the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.

Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.

Acts 2:21 And it shall be, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

The phrase, “In the last days”, is a common Old Testament saying that points to the Messiah’s return and reign.

In The Last Days Isaiah 2:2-4 Jeremiah 23:20-22 Ezekiel 38:15-16
Hosea 3:4-5 Micah 4:1-2

Isaiah 2:2-4 Now it will come about that in the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the mountains, and will be

Isaiah 2:2-4 raised above the hills; and all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

Isaiah 2:2-4 to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us concerning His ways and that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from Zion and the

Isaiah 2:2-4 Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, and will render decisions for many peoples; and they will hammer their

Isaiah 2:2-4 swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they learn war.

He ends his explanation with another one of those powerful phrases common to the Scriptures.

The Day of The Lord!

While it can refer to any time God acts in judgment, in this particular passage it refers to the second coming and judgment.

Here are some of those passages from the Old Testament.

The Day of the Lord Isaiah 13:6 Ezekiel 30:2 Joel 1:15; 2:1-11; 3:14
Amos 5:18-20 Obadiah 1:15

Zephaniah 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the day of the Lord’s wrath; and all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy,

Zephaniah 1:18 for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth.

The book of Revelation declares several of these things again.

Blood Revelation 6:8 Revelation 8:7-9 Revelation 9:15 Revelation 14:20

Fire Revelation 8:5 Revelation 8:7 Revelation 8:8 Revelation 8:10

Smoke Revelation 9:2-3 Revelation 9:17-18 Revelation 18:9

Revelation 8:7 And the first sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood and they were thrown to the earth, and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third

Revelation 8:7 of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

Revelation 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of sea became blood;

Revelation 8:9 and a third of the creatures, which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Then Peter uses the last verse of the prophecy to introduce the primary topic of his sermon.

Those who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

He will describe to his hearers exactly who the Savior is and what is required for salvation.

Let’s head back to Acts 2:22-36

Acts 2:22a Men of Israel, listen to these words of Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed

Acts 2:22b-23a through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know – this Man, delivered up by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross

Acts 2:23b-24a by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. And God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him

Acts 2:24b-25 to be held in its power. For David says of Him, ‘I was always beholding the Lord in my presence; for He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.

Acts 2:26-27a Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will abide in hope; because Thou wilt not abandon my soul to

Acts 2:27b-28 Hades, nor allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay. Thou hast made me full of gladness with Thy presence.’

Acts 2:29 Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

Acts 2:30 And so, because he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants upon his throne,

Acts 2:31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay.

Acts 2:32 This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.

Acts 2:33 Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth

Acts 2:33b-34 this which you both see and hear. For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand,

Acts 2:35 until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet.’

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified.”

While Peter has everyone considering the coming of Messiah and His earthly rule…

He points to the life and ministry of Jesus.

He says, “You experienced His ministry, rejected His ministry and put Him to death.”

Even though God confirmed Him, you had a different plan.

Miracles

G1411 δύναμις doo'-nam-is Force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): - ability, abundance, might, power, strength, mighty work.

Wonders

G5059 τέρας ter'-as Of uncertain affinity; a prodigy or omen: - wonder.

Signs

G4592 σημεῖον say-mi'-on An indication, especially ceremonially or supernaturally: - miracle, sign, token, wonder.

What a reminder for the people.

God performed all these things through Jesus in your very midst just as you know yourselves.

Then after reminding them of His ministry and death, he quickly turns to the resurrection of Jesus.

Not only does he mention the resurrection, but that God exalted Him to His right hand.

Let us leave no doubt that Jesus Christ is the Messiah!

Jesus is the One that King David was prophesying about.

He is the One who will sit upon the throne of David and rule and reign forever and ever.

He then talks about the promise of the Holy Spirit and their witness to God’s promise.

So it’s time for you to reevaluate your current position and choose life.

We’ll pick up there next week and see who and/or what they chose.
