1 The possibilities for ICT in Physical Education

2 What I am going to tell you
In the following Presentation we will discuss several ways in which ICT can enhance your Physical Education lesson.

3 Let’s start at the beginning
1 Introduction Let’s start at the beginning

4 Learners in the internet age don’t need more information
Learners in the internet age don’t need more information. They need to know how to efficiently use the massive amount of information available at their fingertips – to determine what’s credible, what’s relevant, and when its useful to reference. - Anna Sabramowicz

5 It is the pen and paper of our time
Why ICT? Because: It is the pen and paper of our time It puts a wealth of knowledge at your finger tips It is a forum of communication ICT is a crucial skill in today’s work environment

6 THE BIG CONCEPT ICT can be part of a Physical Education lesson, just as much as in any other subject.

7 Rational for ICT in Physical Education
In fact, the English National Curriculum states that (QCA, 2004, p.38): Pupils should be given the opportunity to support their work by being taught to: Find things out from a variety of sources, selecting and synthesising the information to meet their needs and developing an ability to question its accuracy, bias and plausability; Develop their ideas using ICT tools to amend and refine their work and enhance its quality and accuracy; Exchange and share information, both directly and through electronic media; Review, modify and evaluate their work, reflecting critically on its quality, as it progresses.

8 We will look at two parts
ICT for the teacher: How can a PE teacher use Technology to enhance his or her lessons? ICT for the student: How can we engage a student in learning through technology, i.e. apply technology in our lesson?

9 A picture is worth a thousand words
The modern Teacher has to be versed in all three facetts of educational knowledge: Pedagogical Knowledge Content Knowledge Technological Knowledge And bring them together in the Classroom environment.

10 How can we teach content through ICT?
2 ICT for the teacher How can we teach content through ICT?

11 Find and share resources Network and communicate with each other
In preparation Teachers are ALREADY using information and communication technology to: Find and share resources Network and communicate with each other Share and develop ideas and experiences

12 ICT for Content 01 Use IT learning walls and PowerPoint Presentations 02 Use Images and Videos to introduce skills 03 Use audio devices and recordings for instruction Use Blogs or Dropbox to share content with students 04

13 How can we apply technology to our class?
3 ICT for the Student How can we apply technology to our class?

14 The list of applications is limitless.
ICT for Application The list of applications is limitless. Music, applications that give feedback on movement quality, Dance Videos, Slow-motion camera apps, HR-Monitors, Fitness apps… …and ICT can be used to include non-paticipants!

15 A BIG IDEA: Skype classrooms have been used for quite a while, enabling students to partake in distance learning. So why don’t we bring in specialists from all around the world to our PE class? Or, why don’t we organise a dance off against a class in south Africa?

16 Is ICT always appropriate?
4 Is ICT always appropriate? Have a guess!!!

17 ICT in Physical Activity
Obviously ICT is not always appropriate. When considering the use of ICT the teacher should look at several components (Caple, 2004, p. 212), such as: Available time Conformity with learning outcomes Benefit to learning Age of students Location of lesson Teachers competence in ICT

18 What we, as teacher, need to do
5 What we, as teacher, need to do The Process

19 Our process is easy Teachers need to be educated in the use of Technology and its applications Teachers need to work together and create new possibilities for ICT Deliever world class education through Information technology

20 One last thought for you:
Just don’t forget Physical Education is about being active. As Chia et al. (2002) highlight, too much technology in Physical Education may contradict the overall aim of the subject.
