Onsite Training at JLab
Jonathan Creel Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant 4-5 December 2018 Contracted by: DOE DE-AC05-00OR22725
2
Typical training process On site training
Outline Typical training process On site training How does it work Benefits Specifics Rationale Opportunities Closing the gap Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
3
Typical Training Process
Technical Skills Become familiar with equipment and processes Technical staff learns operations, troubleshooting, repair, calibrations, and procedures Leadership helps define equipment, helps place contracts, follows procurements Planning and Procedure Skills Become familiar with their specific equipment and help modify procedures to match Technical staff learns planning for safety, maintenance, repair, and commissioning while they build their procedures Leadership staff helps plan priorities, safety participates in installation and commissioning planning Commissioning and Operation Skills Return to accept equipment as it arrives and assist with installation and commissioning Technical staff learns pre-commissioning, commissioning, and operations with oversight Leadership staff learns commissioning and operations and transitions for smooth handover Successfully Utilized NCLS Michigan State University SNS Oakridge NASA Houston Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
4
Onsite Training How does it work
Subteams with specific skill sets are chosen and paired up with teams at JLab to gain actual hands on experience in their area Teams do the following Complete JLab safety training Participate in daily safety and work plan meetings Perform actual work along side experienced personnel Participate in the on call system with a backup Participate in planning complex maintenance and repairs Participate in task debriefings (can we do better?) Learn about specific differences for their equipment Participate in writing and modifying procedures for their equipment Take ownership Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
5
Onsite Training Benefits
Builds a common foundation of terminology, methodology, and thought processes Allows personnel to become familiar with the day to day operation, maintenance, and repair of all cryogenic system subcomponents Builds a strong network of cooperation between Jlab personnel and personnel from sister laboratory’s Prepares colleagues for receiving their equipment Greatly enhances the likelihood of success during pre-commissioning, commissioning, and operations Reduces the need for Jlab to provide extensive detailed doc Reduces the need for Jlab to provide extensive detailed training Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
6
Onsite Training Specific Benefits
Electrical engineers and technicians gain experience Hardware and software on operational systems Maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repairs Mechanical engineers and technicians gain experience System clean up, vacuum system maintenance Managing purifiers, cleaning carbon and molsieve beds Managing oil, maintaining motors, pumps and valves Diagnosing and repairing pumps, seals, valves Process engineers and operators gain experience Experience with monitoring operations and making mode changes Reacting to alarms and repairs Learning to operate efficiently to reduce utilities and wear Learning on-call activities Directing technical staff during emergencies Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
7
Onsite Training Rationale
Jlab is not a commercial vendor and does not have extensive resources for training and documentation production and control Using this model helps the end users be partial responsible for development of their own documentation and training to their standards Reduces the need for Jlab to provide extensive detailed documentation Reduces the need for Jlab to provide extensive equipment specific training Workshop on Commissioning of LCLS-II Cryoplant
