1 Naming Ionic Compounds
Metals react with non-metals to form ionic compounds, result in net charge of zero Ionic compounds = “Salt”; Cation(s) attract Anion(s) by ionic bonding, results in high m.p. Memorize the fixed charge of each simple ion, Table 5.1, p.125 (no exceptions for Group 1,2,7) Rules for naming Binary type I, p.125 Examples p self check 5.1 Write chemical formulas from names Q: what is the overall net charge of each compound? 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin

2 Binary Type II Compounds
Most transition metals and tin, lead carry more than one type of charge Table 5.2, see also –ic, -ous endings Exceptions: Ag+, Zn+2 (both fixed charge) Rules p.128, must determine the charge number of cations and assign Roman Numeral! Remember to keep each compound net charge of zero Examples p 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin

3 Non-metal compounds (Type III)
Provide headcount of each element Table 5.3 p.132 Rules p.132 Name the first element without change, and the second element with –ide ending Do Not use mono for the first element Examples p Review, self check 5.5 in classroom Write chemical formulas from names 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin

4 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin
Polyatomic Ions Oxyanions, -ate and -ite ending SO4-2 vs. SO3-2 NO3- vs. NO2- Must learn the composition and charge of the group, Table 5.4 p.137 Recognize the parts when a formula is given Examples p.138 Self check 5.6, keep net charge ZERO for each compound Review Self check 5.7 p.140 Replace Cl with Br, I in chlorate, chlorite Q: No headcounts is necessary in this category, why? 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin

5 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin
Naming Acids The formation of acids in water, assign (aq) Add H+ to oxyanions in Table 5.4 to form acids Must recognize H+ in the formula as an acidic proton in water, sour taste, corrosive! Oxygen-containing acid, -ic acid (for oxyanion with –ate ending) -ous…acid (for –ite ending) Table 5.6 p.141 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin

6 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin
Naming Acids If oxygen-free, “Hydro-…..ic acid” Compare HCl (aq) hydrochloric acid HCl (g) hydrogen chloride Table 5.5 p.141(short formula but long name!) Write chemical formulas from names HW#50 p.146 Q: Replace Cl in HClO3 (chloric acid) with Br and I and name the resultant acids. Q: Write the names for H2S(g) and H2S(aq) 7/15/2019 Chem 2 Chapter 5 Jean Lee Lin
