2-1 Inductive Reasoning and Conjecture
Vocab: Inductive reasoning: reasoning using a specific number of examples to make a conclusion Conjecture: A concluding statement reached from inductive reasoning Counterexample: An example proving a statement false
2
Patterns and Conjecture
Write a conjecture that describes the pattern in each sequence. Then use your conjecture to find the next item in the sequence. Ex 1: –5, 10, –20, 40 Ex 2: 1, 10, 100, 1000
3
Algebraic and Geometric Conjectures
Write a conjecture Ex 3: ∠1 and ∠2 form a right angle. Ex 4: The sum of two odd numbers
4
Counterexamples Write a conjecture if true, if false give a counterexample Ex 5: If n is a real number, then n² > n Ex 6: If ∠ ABC and ∠ DEF are supplementary, then ∠ ABC and ∠ DEF form a linear pair.
