Facts About Tobacco What is Tobacco?
LESSON 1 Facts About Tobacco BIG IDEA The substances contained in tobacco products are very harmful to your health. What is Tobacco? Tobacco is considered to be a stimulant, meaning that it increases the heartbeat and raises blood pressure. It contains harmful substances that are released when a person smokes or chews it. Tobacco companies add more harmful ingredients when they prepare tobacco to be sold. It is estimated that there are more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco—many of which have been proven to cause cancer. Some of the same ingredients found in cleaning products or pest poisons are added to tobacco products. The chemicals in tobacco affect the person who uses the tobacco as well as those who may be nearby. For this reason, the U.S. government has limited the sale of tobacco products to adults. It is illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18. It is also illegal for people under age 18 to use tobacco products. Lesson Home
