Use with grass resin sources
SS1a Critique claims guide Use with grass resin sources The claim is: A grass-resin material has properties suitable for making smartphone casing. Our first piece of evidence is: Data on properties of grass-resin material from a published scientific study. Our second piece of evidence is: Data on properties of current smartphone casing materials from a data book. We think the claim is / is not reasonable. Our reasoning is: [Compare the data for the three different materials]

Use with sugar battery sources
SS2 Interrogate sources checklist Write in the name of the source at the top of each column. Add ticks to show if the source contains evidence of reliability. Count up the number of ticks in each column. The more there are, the more reliable the source is. Use with sugar battery sources Name of source Evidence of reliability The authors are qualified scientists Any research mentioned has been published in a peer-reviewed journal The research is recent (< 5 years old) The researcher or funder will not benefit from the source (e.g. by making money) It is not biased (favours one opinion) It contains a scientific explanation of the findings The findings are backed up by other research The research was based on a lot of data

Use with circuit board sources Identify the variables
Analyse patterns: bar charts SS3a Use with circuit board sources Figure 1 The independent variable (x-axis) is Identify the variables The dependent variable (y-axis) is Write a sentence to describe what the bar chart shows. Include the names of the two variables. The _____________________________ was greater when the CNF film was treated with the ______________________________ fungus species. Describe the pattern Add values to illustrate any differences. The mass loss was ________% when the CNF paper was treated with P. Placenta fungus, and _______% when CNF paper was treated with P. Chrysosporium fungus. Give numbers Say how many times larger one number is than another. The mass loss was _____________________ when the CNF paper was treated with P. placenta fungus compared to when it was was treated with P. Chrysosporium fungus. Compare numbers If possible, use scientific ideas to suggest reasons for any differences. The mass loss was greater with the P. chrysosporium fungus because... Suggest reasons
