Information Modelling Workshop Overview
Michael Brenner, ClearPath Networks, ETSI NFV ISG Vice-Chairman Klaus Martiny, Deutsche Telekom, NOC Vice-Chairman *Hosted by CableLabs, Louisville, Colorado USA, January 13-14, 2016*

Motivation The benefits we are looking for in NFV (cf. ETSI GS NFV 001): Rapid service innovation through software based deployment and operationalization of network functions and end-end services Improved operational efficiencies resulting from common automation and operating procedures Reduced power usage achieved by migrating workloads and powering down unused hardware Standardized and open interfaces between network functions and their management entities so that decoupled network elements can be provided by different players Greater flexibility in assigning VNFs to hardware Improved capital efficiencies compared with dedicated hardware implementations © ETSI All rights reserved

Objectives for Information Modelling Workshop
Problem Statement Different information models and data models are being used amongst SDOs and open source communities resulting in fragmentation and complexity for implementation hence increased cost and delayed time to market Workshop Objectives To seek consensus that there is a problem and that it should be addressed through industry collaboration Do we know what the issues are: Issue 1, Issue 2, … To foster a spirit of collaboration and commitment to work together to address the problem To understand how different information models and data models are impacted by NFV or are impacting NFV To reach agreement on the next steps for collaboration towards harmonization of the aspects of information models that are applicable to NFV

“Rules of engagement” Assess whether “as a village” we can do better to help the NFV paradigm succeed, and if so, how. No intent to impact any organization’s IM/DM current plans Strive towards rough consensus on actions to undertake, even if actions may not impact every organization Agreed actions to be confirmed during WS by an organization designated leader (have ONE pre-identified). Take any such agreed actions back to organizations for feedback/approval © ETSI All rights reserved

Proposed issues/proposals discussion flow
Alternative 1: Discuss/clarify issues/consolidate: 2.5 hrs Attempt to merge/group/sort the issues by merging related topics & group them by: Issues impacting more than 2 orgs (which ones, if possible); vs exactly 2 organizations (which ones, if possible) vs Issues impacting a single a organization (which one, if possible) Alternative 2: Discuss/clarify issues/consolidate “low hanging fruit”: 1.5 hrs If a limited amount of “difficult” issues remain, a ready-to-go team uses a breakout room for 1 hours to progress on consolidation In the main room, we start discussing the process going forward & examples of how we could progress Present/discuss results of additional “processing”: 15 min Propose/discuss process to address issues Lunch Back to original agenda (agree process/next steps/timeline/PR) © ETSI All righrved
8
Process to address issues
Take the issues/proposals list to process inside each organization Identify the relationship/impact of the issue/proposal to the organization Identify issue(s) in which organization is interested to collaborate Clarify the business driver for working on identified issue(s) Prioritize Identify other organizations with whom you may be interested to collaborate to solve identified issues Engage in discussions: create a “coalition of the willing” (per issue) Make a realistic plan agreeable to the “coalition”(time, IPR constraints) Provide coordinated to all organizations – see overall timeline proposal Other? Next significant milestone … execute on the plan © ETSI All rights reserved
9
Examples: “low hanging fruit” for next 3-6 months
Create an industry landscape with orgs NFV-related IM/DM “touchpoints”: Peer-to-peer impact – e.g. ONF-ETSI NFV, 3GPP-ETSI NFV One-to-many Many-to-many Identify an initial small subset of terminology used for NFV-related IM/DM to be aligned across multiple orgs Identify what “NFV CIM” means within the context of peering with another organization, before reaching to “NFV CIM” for all; when agreed peer-wise, progress on: common terminology, methodology, joint work © ETSI All rights reserved

Network Operators desired industry collaboration timeline for NFV Information Model
End of March, 2016 (Conference call, Date: TBD) Follow up, initial statement for each organization plan Review/align work programs and develop proposals for NFV IM collaboration Middle of June, 2016 (Joint Workshop, Date/location: TBD) Presentation and analysis of detailed plan from each organization Middle of September, 2016 (Conference call, Date: TBD) Progress update from each organization Review/align End of December, 2016 (Joint Workshop, Date/location: TBD) Joint report on alignment of information model across industry including collaborative action completed by each organization Final presentation from each organization Discuss additional actions for 2017 and plan implementations

What we achieved (and it is a LOT!)
Very useful information sharing related to IM/DM affecting/affected by NFV, across organizations Agreed on the WS problem statement regarding IM/DM industry fragmentation and collected a set of issues affecting “the ideal” IM/DM work outcome for NFV, and associated proposals to address Shared a process for consolidating issues, with examples Shared a process for next steps in processing issues/proposals at each organization level Presented a potential timeline for progress reporting Agreed to share feedback on progress at end of March: Regarding processing the issues/proposals & proposed timeline Agreed on messages to media/analyst © ETSI All rights reserved
