1 14.8 Acid-Base Properties of Salts
Subtitle

2 Salts that Produce Neutral Solutions
If the salt is made of the cation of a strong base and the anion of a strong acid it will have no effect on pH when dissolved in water Cations of strong bases include: Na+, K+, etc These have no affinity for Hydrogen ions Anions of strong acids include: Cl-, NO3- etc.. These would have no affinity for Hydrogen ions In both cases the pH is not changed due to the presence of these ions

3 Salts that produce basic solutions
For any salt whose cation has neutral properties and whose anion is the conjugate base of a weak acid the aqueous solution will be basic In this scenario the CONJUGATE BASE (strong) comes from the dissociation of a WEAK ACID

4 Salts that produce acidic solutions
Situation where the CONJUGATE ACID is from a WEAK BASE Dissociation of the weak base produces this strong ion Also found when a salt dissociates into a highly charged metallic ion such as Al3+ The highly charged cation polarizes water and one Hydrogen from the water molecule will become H+ Leads to an acidic pH overall

5 Salts with Acidic and Basic Ions
If Ka for the acidic ion is greater than Kb for the basic ion the solution will be ACIDIC If the Kb for the basic ion is greater than the Ka for the acidic ion, the solution will be BASIC If the Kb for the basic ion is the same as the the Ka for the acidic ion, the solution will be NEUTRAL
