Senior Internship Program Requirements & Expectations
Spring 2019

Eligibility for Participation
In order to begin your internship on Monday, May 20th, you must: Have met ALL graduation requirements, including not X-ing any graduation requirements (please refer to the new attendance policy and how it is prorated for seniors) Have no outstanding fees/have a clean Blue List Have administrative approval Have obtained a copy of your Emergency Medical Form (will be given to you at the Send-Off Breakfast) ***Have Obtained ALL Program Approvals*** Log into your account ( If you see you’re all set! If you see then you need to verify approvals of your parent, SIP Staff, Faculty Mentor, and Site Supervisor. NOTE: If any of these above requirements are NOT met, you either will not be allowed to begin your internship immediately or will not be allowed to do your internship at all.

Upcoming Important Dates
Thursday, May 16th, 7:00am - Mandatory Send-Off Breakfast at the Pavilion (South Gym if rains) Monday, May 20th - First Day of Internship Thursday, June 13th - Last Full Day of Internship Friday, June 14th - Internship Symposium! (see below for details) (Tuesday, June 18th - GRADUATION!!)

Send-Off Breakfast Mandatory - Attendance will be taken!!)
When: Thursday, May 16th at 7:00am Where: Pavilion (South Gym if rains) Purpose: To come together one last time before heading off on your internships AND to give you the book The Bigs (see below) AND your EMERGENCY MEDICAL FORM, which you will need to give to your Site Supervisor the first day of your internship! What to Wear: Your college sweatshirt! We are hoping to take a big group picture of all of you. : )

During Your Internship
You are required to: Day 1: Give your Site Supervisor your Emergency Medical Form!! Show up on time everyday, be professional, act and dress appropriately, ask questions (do NOT be on your cell phone!!!). *Read selected portions of The Bigs and complete weekly corresponding journal entries (*four journals total, see below for details). Coordinate a day/time for your DHS Faculty Mentor to visit you at your site. If any issues arise over the course of your internship experience, please contact your DHS Faculty Mentor for assistance immediately.

During Your Internship (cont.)
Complete timesheets on the internship website that reflect at least 30 hours per week spent at your internship site (the internship site will you about how to record your hours). Timesheets should accurately reflect your time spent on the site and will be approved each week by your Site Supervisor on the internship website - if a timing conflict arises, be sure to communicate with your Site Supervisor immediately and come up with a plan for making up hours. (Memorial Day: If your internship site is open, you are expected to attend as normal. If your internship site is closed, you do not need to make up these hours.) Present at the Senior Internship Symposium on Friday, June 14th (see below for details).

Weekly Journal Entries
Each of you will receive a copy of the book, The Bigs at the Send-Off Breakfast. The Bigs is a book by Ben Carpenter that gives students and young professionals helpful advice on how to find a great job, do a great job, be leaders, and live productive and happy lives. Every Friday the Senior Internship website will you prompting you to complete a journal entry for the week. This journal entry should be completed on the internship website and is due on Sunday. There will be two parts to each journal entry: Part 1) Discussing what you did at your internship site that previous week, and 2) Responding to a prompt related to a selected portion of The Bigs. Journal Entries should be: thoughtful and honest reflections, are not academic essays (they are free-writes), reflect school-appropriate content (see forthcoming Internship Evaluation Rubric). NOTE: Your Faculty Mentor will be checking for and reading your journal entry each Monday, and he/she will be considering your entries in your overall Internship Evaluation (see forthcoming Internship Evaluation Rubric).

Senior Internship Symposium
When: Friday, June 14th at 1:00pm Where: DHS - Stay tuned for room assignments! Who: DHS Seniors and Faculty Mentors (Site Supervisors and parents are also welcome to attend if they would like) Purpose: The Senior Internship Symposium is a fun opportunity for you to reflect upon your internship experience and share your experience with others. You will create a 5-minute media presentation about your internship experience.

Presentations can be in the form of: PowerPoint, Prezi, video, pictures with voiceover, etc. (Please check in with Mr. Buchta or Ms. Branca if you have another idea - there are a lot of interesting apps out there now that could work!) You will be assigned to a room of about 10 other seniors where you will present to each other and your Faculty Mentor (who will grade your presentation according to the Internship Evaluation Rubric). Your Symposium presentation must include the following information (also see attached Symposium Guidelines and Internship Evaluation Rubric): Where you completed your internship What you did over the course of your internship What you learned from your internship experience What impact your internship experience will have for you going forward

Internship Evaluation
See forthcoming Internship Evaluation Rubric Your internship experience will be reflected on your final transcript as “Pass,” “Pass with Distinction,” or “Incomplete.” Your Faculty Mentor will use the Internship Evaluation Rubric to determine whether you Pass, Pass with Distinction, or receive an Incomplete. The rubric evaluates you on the following areas of your internship experience: Timely completion of program requirements/Communication with Faculty Mentor 30-hour per week requirement Journal Entries Symposium Presentation
