What is an adjective clause?
An adjective clause is a group of words that adds extra information to a sentence It starts with who, that, which, or whose It contains a subject and verb It can be removed from the sentence without making the sentence incomplete because it’s extra information

Examples That book that I read last was Night. My mother, whose degree is in medicine, works as a teacher. Any student who wants to join tennis club must sign up this week. Argentina, which is in South America, has warm weather all year.

Any student must sign up this week.
Notice that adjective clauses are extra information. I can remove it from the sentences & still have a complete sentence left That book was Night. Any student must sign up this week. That book that I read last was Night. Any student who wants to join tennis club must sign up this week.

You can put more detail in a sentence by adding an adjective clause You can add ANY detail about ANY noun in the sentence Usually, the detail is connected the the main sentence

My brother goes to college. I could add a detail about my brother. My brother, who works part-time, goes to college. My brother, whose major is Chemistry, goes to college. I could add a detail about college My brother goes to college, which costs a lot of money. My brother goes to a college that is in the US.

Goal 3: Combine sentences to form adjective clauses
If you have two sentences that include the same noun, you can combine them with an adjective clause. Change one of the sentences into an adjective clause.

Examples of combining sentences
My parents moved to America. They were originally from Russia. My parents, who were from Russia, moved to America. Russia is a harsh country. It has many poor people. Russia, which has many poor people, is a harsh country. The Smiths recently purchased a home. It is near Main Street. The Smiths recently purchased a home that is near Main Street. I bought a car from Melanie. It doesn’t run very well. I bought a car, which doesn’t run very well, from Melanie.

Practice: combine these sentences with adjective clauses.
The hospital owns a cafeteria. It serves over 1,000 people daily. My sister was scared of Slappy the circus clown. The clown had giant eyes. The rivers are low now. In the summer, they are usually high. Sundown is a town of 20,000 people. All these people are over 60 years old. A lawyer must respect the law. But a lawyer’s first responsibility is to his or her client. Sally wants to be a doctor. Her parents both work in the medical field.
