3 PROBATION VS PAROLE Probation and parole are both alternatives to incarceration. However, probation occurs prior to and often instead of jail or prison time, while parole is an early release from prison.

Aspiring probation officers may apply to criminal justice programs with concentrations in corrections.

Probation officers may also be sworn peace officers, but they generally do not carry guns. However each jurisdiction and department that these officers work in would set individual policies, and each jurisdiction is different. The issue of probation officers carrying is controversial.

12 PAROLE OFFICERS A Parole officer is/can be a dangerous job. So in the Unites States, all parole officers are sworn peace officers permitted by law to carry a gun. In order to become a parole officer, you must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in corrections, psychology, criminal justice, social work, or a related degree. Federal parole officers, however, require applicants to hold master's degrees in one of these areas.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California parole officers earn some of the highest salaries in the country.  The earn from $5,033 up to $7,437 per month, or between $60,396 and $89,244 per year.

California Penal Code 3056 outlines the rules for parole. It states that prisoners on parole must continue to be under the official supervision of the State. In addition, parolees can be rearrested at any time deemed necessary, during the time they are on parole.
