Cellular Respiration is the process by which cells convert glucose into energy ATP. Cellular Respiration occurs in the mitochondria. The general reaction for cellular respiration is: Oxygen + glucose = carbon dioxide + water + energy (ATP) The energy is in the form of ATP Adenosine triphosphate

Cellular Respiration Describe the structure and function of the mitochondria Uses energy from the food we eat to make high energy compounds that the cell can use to power growth, development and movement. Mitochondria have two membranes – outer and inner. The inner folds is where Pyruvic acid is converted into ATP energy

Cellular Respiration Describe what happens during the process of glycolysis – Occurs in the CYTOPLASM Glycolysis the process in which one molecule of glucose is broken in half, producing two molecules of pyruvic acid – a 3 carbon compound.

Lactic Acid Fermentation Alcoholic Fermentation Muscle cells produce lactic acid when there is not enough oxygen present to convert pyruvic acid to ATP. Yeast and a few other microorganisms use alcoholic fermentation forming ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide as waste products. This is what causes bread to rise
