Lisa Wilson, PhD, RPHNutr 18th January 2011 The International Longevity Centre - UK (ILC-UK) is an independent, non-partisan think-tank dedicated to addressing issues of longevity, ageing and population change. It develops ideas, undertakes research and creates a forum for debate.

2 Background More people in UK receiving meals in their own homes than living in care homes Estimated 1 in 10 people >65 years living in the community are at risk of malnutrition Understanding and knowledge of malnutrition in the care sector remains an issue Further challenges through tightening of referral criteria and cost cutting measures Community meals can do more than provide part of a domiciliary care package

Chaired by Baroness Greengross Aimed to understand the role of personalisation in community meals determine who in government is responsible determine how we can ensure equality of access and services to all older people in UK Included representatives from: NACC, Apetito, WRVS, BAPEN, Age UK, UKHCA, NPSA, Dietitians & ILC-UK

4 Recommendations remain in good nutritional health
1. There is no one size fits all solution 2. Vital to raise awareness among primary and social care 3. Strong economic argument for supporting older people to remain in good nutritional health 4. Meal provision and access to food a core part of social care packages and must include at risk groups 5. Need a review of referral criteria – encourage use of MUST

5 Recommendations community meals in preventing ill health services
6. Cost benefit analysis to demonstrate key role of community meals in preventing ill health 7. Personalisation is a choice mechanism not a way to cut services 8. Campaign to support older people to understand importance of food and risks of malnutrition in ageing 9. One set of nutrition standards are needed for meal providers 10. Nutrition standard needed for signposting services where no community meals service exists
