Run-on Sentences Pg. 120
2
What are they? A run-on sentence is two or more sentences written as though they were one sentence There are two types of run-on sentences: Comma Splice-when a comma is used instead of a semicolon or period Missing punctuation or conjunction-when two sentences are joined together without a conjunction or a semicolon
3
Comma splice For generations, people have enjoyed ice cream as dessert, history records show that ice cream was invented in China. Notice that this is actually two sentences put together, so it makes the sentence a comma splice
4
Missing Punctuation or conjunction
At first they sold the product locally soon orders were pouring in from all over the country. Notice this is two sentences put together without a semicolon (;) or a comma and a conjunction
5
How do we fix these? Put a period at the end of the first sentence and start a new sentence with the other Put a semicolon between the first and second sentence as we have previously studied Put a comma and a conjunction between the two sentences Tom went to the mall, he had a lot of fun. Tom went to the mall. He had a lot of fun. Tom went to the mall, he had a lot of fun. Tom went to the mall; he had a lot of fun. Tom went to the mall, he had a lot of fun. Tom went to the mall, and he had a lot of fun.
