BEHAVIOR OF GASES Beta Science
2
Overview In this PowerPoint, you will learn how gases behave when subjected to changes in temperature and pressure. You will also learn about two important gas laws.
3
Effects of Temperature on Gas Particles Temperature: a measure of how hot or cold something is. Specifically, temperature is a measure of the movement of particles. The hotter a substance is, the faster the particles in the substance will move. The colder a substance is, the slower the particles in the substance will move.
4
Volume The volume of a gas depends on the container that the gas is in. Particles of gasses are easily compressible compared to those of liquids and solids.
5
Pressure Pressure: The amount of force exerted on a given area of surface. Think of pressure as the amount of of times the particles of a gas hit the inside of their container. Ex. there are more particles of air in a basketball than in a beach ball, therefore, a basketball feels harder than a beach ball.
6
Boyles Law Boyles Law: states that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure of a gas when temperature is constant. As the pressure of a gas increases, the volume decreases by the same amount. (Show Boyles Law Video)
7
Charless Law Charless Law: the volume of a gas is directly proportional to the temperature of a gas when pressure is constant. While Boyles Law deals with volume and pressure, Charless Law deals with volume of a gas while considering temperature. In Charless Law, pressure is constant which means it stays the same all of the time. (Ping-Pong Ball Demonstration)
