Timothy was left in Ephesus to help the people their
Chapter 1 shows us Paul’s apostleship is true and that he has authority for the things he is telling Timothy
Timothy is a very important person to Paul, calls him a true son
Tells Timothy to charge the Ephesians to not teach false doctrine, heed fable/genealogies b/c they tear down instead of build up
Paul tells of the great grace that was bestowed on him b/c he was once a persecutor but now he is in the ministry
Paul charges Timothy to “wage the good warfare having faith and a good conscience”

3. 1 Timothy 2:1-7 Pray for all (2:1-2) Elements of prayer
Supplication – stresses a sense of need
Prayers – normal requests
Intercessions – pleading for others
Giving Thanks – showing gratefulness
Who to pray for?
All men, kings, those in authority
Why?
Quiet and peaceable life
The “Therefore” looks back to the previous charge made to Timothy to protect the future of the Church by exposing false teachers and seeing that only sound doctrine is taught and all things are done in an uplifting manner.
Rom. 3:23 tells us that all have sinned, so all men need God’s love and grace. Great message to the Jews in those days that had a bad attitude toward Gentiles. All men need our prayers!
People in power/authority are there because God put them there. Rom. 13:1-7 say they are ordained of God. They bear a great responsibility, so they need our prayers.
People in authority have a direct influence on whether or not we can live a quiet and peaceable life.
Quiet – “tranquility arising from without.” Protection from outside persecution, physical violence
Peaceable – “tranquility from within”
Godliness – attitude toward God
Reverence (gravity, honesty- attitude toward fellow man

4. 1 Timothy 2:1-7 Prayer for all is good and acceptable (2:3)

Being saved and knowledge of truth go hand in hand.
Good passage to fight Calvinist teaching.
2 Cor. 2:5 – “all must give an account for things done in the body, whether good or bad”
2 Pet. 3:9 – “not willing than any should perish but that all should come to repentance”
Mediator – “a go between” No better mediator for us than Christ, b/c he is both deity and he lived as a man. Tempted on all points as a man (Heb. 2:14-18, 4:15) yet sinned not. He can completely understand, represent and act on our behalf.
Heb. 2: Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Heb. 4: For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Gave His life voluntarily.
Matt. 20: just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
John 10: “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.

6. 1 Timothy 2:8-15 Desire for men to pray everywhere (2:8)
Lifting up holy hands
This is not mandating our posture in prayer
Neh. 8:6, Psalm 141:2
Without wrath and doubting
God demands proper attitude in prayer
John 9:31, James 1:6-7, Phil. 2:14
Men, not women should lead public prayers.
“Everywhere” may have been a point to the Jews and Greeks who thought that prayers in their temples were effective that the others? Jesus told woman at the well in Samaria that place of worship is inconsequential.
Lifting up holy hands is not a mandate of posture in prayer, but rather a custom. “it is merely an allusion to the ancient practice of presenting the uplifted hands in respectful petition to God”
Holy hands – living holy lives, unstained with wrong.
Neh. 8:6 – “ all the people answered Amen, Amen while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord…”
Psalm 141:2 – “Let my prayer be set before you as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”
God has always demanded the proper attitude of heart as a condition of an acceptable prayer.
Psalm 66:18 – “if I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.”
Prov. 15:8 – “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But the prayer of the upright is His delight.”
John 9:31 – “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.”
James 1: But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; “
Phil. 2:14 – “Do all things without complaining and disputing

Propriety and moderation

In like manner refers back to Paul’s will/desire in verse 8. Seems to be talking about public assembly.
adorn– “ to put in order, arrange, make ready…”
modest – “orderly, well-arranged, descent, modest” 1 Tim. 3:2 as qualification of elder (of good behavior)
This passage seems to focus on the excess of jewelry/apparel that would attract attention. Attention shouldn’t be attracted because of clothing/jewelry or lack of clothing, but godliness and good works.
Ephesus was a city of great wealth. Later warns about dangers of riches in 6:6-10.
Not only public assembly:
1 Peter 3:1-4 - Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. 3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
Prov. 4:23 - Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
