How do the concepts of social class discussed in the texts help you explain how some students do better than others in the schooling system? Examine the differences between the use and meanings of the terms ‘equality’ and ‘equity’.

Identify the problems associated with the concept of a ‘level economic playing field’.
Is the education system a meritocracy? What does this concept mean? Identify some examples of how curriculum plays a role in social reproduction. What is social reproduction?

For Pierre Bourdieu, capital means goods or resources, and he distinguishes between four different types of capital. Discuss the benefits of each with examples. How do these differ between classes? Where do you sit on the spectrum? Where do you hope to sit on the spectrum at the end of your studies?

Economic capital refers to money, property, and other assets.
Social capital refers to social networks of influence or support based on group membership (such as family), friends, or other contacts. Cultural capital refers to cultural knowledge and educational credentials. (bodies, objects, institutions) Symbolic capital refers to socially recognized legitimization such as reputation, respect, prestige or honour.

Economic and cultural capital: Creating community profiles
Create a community profile for both Inala and Fig Tree Pocket based on Bourdieu's notion of economic capital, on the one hand, and 'cultural capital' (as a portmanteau concept for cultural, social, and symbolic), on the other. Consider the positive and negative implications for teachers in using the statistics/information as you have explored in terms of understanding a school community and planning for learning (e.g. judging students ability based on their advantage or disadvantage) To what extent does your group feel the current debate about school funding in this country takes into account disadvange as you have explored in this topic?
